11 films where the music ‘made the movie’

music and movies

Sometimes a movie stands on it’s own just based on the story, but sometimes the music captures the essence of the story and makes it bigger and better. Here’s a list of films that included music that propelled them to a totally different level – maybe it created a mood, captured a moment in time, or just completely upped the adrenaline in the plot. Hopefully you’ve seen all of them, if not, get going and knock them all off your to watch list.

High Fidelity (2000)

The story revolved around record store employees – how could music not play a huge part in the movie?

Lost In Translation (2003)

Music set the mood for this film – stark, isolating, distant…and lots of Kevin Shields.

Velvet Goldmine (1998)

When your film is about rock stars, you have to bring in lots of rock music.

Quirky film about a retired goth. Awesome retro soundtrack perfectly sets the mood.

The comedic songs turned this film up to 11.

Trainspotting (1996)

Without the iconic soundtrack, I doubt this film would have been as successful. It definitely took it to another level.

Judgement Night (1993)

Combining a rock band with a hip-hop act together on every song on the soundtrack was the first of its kind.

They went out clubbing and music set the atmosphere for their lifestyle.

Mods vs. rockers and The Who set the stage.

This soundtrack has some of the best songs of all time.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Starlord’s mixed tape is a big part of the movie and drives the soundtrack.

John Hughes was the king of 80’s comedy and knew how to put together an amazing soundtrack.
