NYC-based band Morricone Youth releases ‘Night of the Living Dead,’ a six song score for George A. Romero’s 1968 zombie classic film of the same name via Country Club Records. ‘Night of the Living Dead’ is available as a limited edition pressing on 500 neon green vinyl as well as digitally, just in time for Halloween.
Morricone Youth was formed in 1999 with a mission statement to compose, re-interpret, perform and record “music written for the moving image” (film/tv soundtracks, library music, etc.) in all incarnations from playing shows dedicated to specific composers/film genres in rock clubs/performance spaces with projections to live scoring films in theaters. Over the years, they’ve released four CDs, toured and had residencies at the Knitting Factory, CBGB, Tonic and, most recently, Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg. Brooklyn Academy of Music and Philadelphia Museum of Art have commissioned the group, respectively, to write an original score to Hitchcock’s The Lodger performed Halloween 2013 and a film music “chance” piece based on a chess match between masters for its Marcel Duchamp exhibit in 2012.
Band members have scored for documentaries, short films, etc. and include current/past members of bands Creedle, Crash Worship, Pain Teens, Pronto (Wilco side band), aMiniature and The Rugburns. Founding member, Devon E. Levins, hosts a weekly “film soundtrack” radio show started in 2007 at East Village Radio as Morricone Youth, now at WFMU 91.1 FM since 2014 under the name Morricone Island.
‘Night of the Living Dead’ includes two reinterpretations of music from the film along with four originals in the vein of Goblin or John Carpenter. The album is the first in a series of a 15 LP/EP vinyl series that coincides with each midnight movie/silent film for which Morricone Youth has written original music and live scored over the past five years at various movie theaters around NYC.
‘Night of the Living Dead’ is available to order now as a limited 500 edition pressing on neon green vinyl that includes a digital download card, as well as from CDBaby.
