Beta Frontiers has shared Still Love, a collaboration with the Vancouver duo HUMANS. The track is the second single lifted from Beta Frontiers’ new EP ‘Heights,’ due out via Buzz Records on May 5th, and follows If I Stayed, a collaboration with DIANA’s Carmen Elle, which recently premiered on FADER. Take a listen to Still Love via Soundcloud below.
Though he has been immersed in production and remix work for artists like Weaves, Fear of Men, PONY and Odonis Odonis, this EP is the first release from Beta Frontiers (AKA Michael Butler) since 2014, when he released an EP featuring another collaboration with Elle that received attention from outlets like Gorilla vs Bear, Noisey and Spin. Still Love is typical of the collaborative ethos of the EP, which along with HUMANS and Elle also features vocal contributions from Laura Hermiston of Butler’s Buzz Records labelmates Twist, beginning with a basic arrangement that Butler then adapted around the vocal and lyrical contributions of his collaborators. In this case, as Butler tells THUMP, that meant stretching his aesthetic further in a pop direction than he has gone before, and the result is a track THUMP describes as “hopelessly catchy from start to finish.”
“Robbie Slade from HUMANS did these vocals and I’d been sitting on them for probably like 2 years, unsure of what to do with them,” says Butler. “Lately I’ve been allowing myself to be a little more influenced by pop music, and thought maybe I could work these into that kind of a structure, but still keep it original. The demo that I initially sent the HUMANS guys, Robbie and Peter [Ricq], was based just around the drums and live bass. The rest was built around the narrative of the lyrics, uplifting, but with a hint of sadness. You’re being rejected, but you’re still in love.”
‘Heights’ will be released via Buzz Records on May 5th. It’s available for preorder here.
