Black Marble, aka Chris Stewart, has shared Anything, the second single from his upcoming album ‘Life in Small Spaces’ — his first full-length since 2021’s ‘Fast Idol’. The album lands August 21st on Sacred Bones, and yes, a hefty run of tour dates is already locked in (scroll down, we’ve got ’em all).
Stewart calls Anything “basically a bedroom pop version of ‘Satisfaction'” — but swap the carnal undertones for something more domestic and low-key chaotic: open bedroom windows, druggy friends dropping by unannounced, and the general modern curse of having endless options and zero follow-through. It’s less about chasing satisfaction and more about how having everything at our fingertips somehow makes it harder to actually connect with anyone.

The single arrives with a video directed by Scott Kiernan, shot at Various/Artists in NYC, that leans hard into the song’s theme of overstimulation — a barrage of vibrant, restless imagery with a meditative Stewart flickering through the noise.

Catching Up: “Jim Carol New Year”
Anything follows lead single Jim Carol New Year, which dropped alongside the album announcement back in June with a Clayton Hunt-directed video. The title nods to poet/musician Jim Carroll and the holiday season alike, and the song takes aim at false promises — organized religion, expert advice, easy answers — in favor of trusting your own judgment. Underneath a rhythmic, twirling synth melody, the repeated line “I forgot my money” becomes a stand-in for everything the narrator refuses to buy into.

About ‘Life in Small Spaces’
‘Life in Small Spaces’ is Black Marble’s most self-reflective record yet — part commentary on the music industry, part meditation on authenticity, part love letter to independent creatives everywhere. Sonically, it’s a shift too: instead of Stewart’s usual walls of synth, the album leans into early-2000s American college-radio guitar (think Pylon, The Necessaries, R. Stevie Moore) layered over live drum samples inspired by Wire’s metronomic style.

Album highlights include It Always Comes to Me, which introduces a self-obsessed narrator convinced they can talk their way out of anything, backed by a warmer, more live-feeling bass and guitar tone. On Other Man’s Dream, Stewart pushes back against outside validation entirely. And Missing History and Panopticon Calls dig into cultural identity and media-fueled paranoia, respectively, through Black Marble’s signature electronic textures.
The album cover finds Stewart alone in a sparse room, confetti frozen mid-eruption around him — a fitting image for a record about finding clarity within limitation.
