The Charlatans UK are keeping the party going. Fresh off We Are Love‘s acclaimed run, the Britpop survivors have dropped the deluxe edition — and it comes loaded with a serious treat for shoegaze heads.
A Remix From Friends
‘We Are Love (Deluxe)‘ is out now on all streaming platforms via BMG, headlined by a brand new take on Deeper and Deeper courtesy of Faders Down — the remix duo of Loz Colbert (Ride) and James Hockley (Chicane). Colbert re-recorded a full drum kit for the “Depth Charge” remix, with Hockley layering in additional keys. The deluxe edition also features Ride’s Mark Gardener flipping lead single We Are Love into the “OX4 Sound Remix.”
Turns out the collab grew out of the road. Loz Colbert joined the band on percussion for their last two tours, and singer Tim Burgess says the remix idea came out of those in-between conversations:
“In between times, we’d talk about music we loved and what we were up to. From that came the idea for a remix, and we knew he loved ‘Deeper and Deeper.’ What he’s done with it is amazing. I’d got a new set of headphones and couldn’t quite believe what I was hearing. He’s a jedi master of the remix, and I never knew.” — Tim Burgess
The Album Itself
‘We Are Love’ is The Charlatans UK’s 14th studio album — a genuine milestone for a band with 13 albums, 22 UK Top 40 singles, and three #1 UK albums already under their belt. Recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales and their own Big Mushroom studio in Cheshire, the record was shaped by an all-star producer lineup: Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), Fred Macpherson (Spector), and Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, The Cranberries).
Mojo gave it a four-star rave, calling it:
“Joy-sparking…it works beautifully, gently distorting [The Charlatans UK’s] songwriting surfaces with sudden psychedelic sun-spots and experimental flares.” — Mojo
Standout tracks Deeper and Deeper and title cut We Are Love have both had their moment in the sun already, with official videos and a live outing on Later… with Jools Holland.
North American Tour Dates
The band heads stateside this fall in support of the record, kicking off September 3 at The Observatory in Santa Ana. The West Coast run gets extra special with support from The Dandy Warhols on the Santa Ana and LA (Hollywood Palladium) dates. Heads up: the Toronto show is already sold out.
