Melbourne’s shape-shifters never sit still for long, and their twenty-eighth album proves it in the strangest way yet. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard have shared Alien Metal, the pulsing title track from their forthcoming album ‘Alien Metal’, out later this summer via p(doom) records. The single arrives with a visualizer designed by longtime collaborator Jason Galea.
Born out of the band’s 2025 ‘rave shows’ — where guitars and drums were swapped for an expansive modular synth rig affectionately named ‘Nathan’ by the band — ‘Alien Metal’ finds the six-piece diving headfirst into techno, hardcore, house and jungle, filtered through their signature psychedelic haze.
“It completely rewired my brain,” said Stu Mackenzie of discovering the Eurorack format. “I was like, ‘I’m going to forget everything I know about music and relearn it all from scratch.'”
The record wasn’t an easy birth. The band scrapped countless recordings and abandoned entire creative universes before a late-night improv session — stretching well over an hour — became the seed for the whole album.
“We’ve never scrapped so much material as we have for this album,” Mackenzie says. “Entire albums, entire universes that were formulated, created, recorded, deleted and started again.”
“Alien Metal goes really hard, but it also goes to really interesting places,” adds Joey Walker. “And it feels unique – it feels like us, still.“
