Shiner dust off the vaults for new rarities collection ‘The Y Section’

Some bands do the victory-lap greatest hits thing. Shiner did not get that memo — and thank god, because ‘The Y Section’, the Kansas City shoegaze/post-hardcore veterans’ new rarities collection, is a way more interesting listen than another “best of” could ever be. Out October 9 via Spartan Records, the record pulls together over 25 years of hard-to-find tracks, detours and unreleased gems, tracing the winding, weird, restless path that turned Shiner into Shiner.

The centerpiece is a heavy-lidded cover of My Bloody Valentine’s Only Shallow, cut back in 2003 at Westend Studios in Kansas with longtime collaborator Paul Malinowski behind the board. It had been living as a tour-closing secret weapon for years before it finally saw the light of day — and now it’s the one pulling this whole collection together.

On the Road

Shiner are hitting the road this fall with a rotating cast of excellent company — Bursting, Criteria, and Fotocrime all join for different legs. The run kicks off September 4 in Milwaukee and wraps October 16 in Las Vegas. Tickets are on sale now via shiner.net.
