DIIV announce new album ‘ZIRP!’ + share feral new single ‘The Fountain’

DIIV have officially confirmed what a very cryptic hotline number mailed to fans last week was hinting at: a new album is coming. The band’s fifth full-length, ‘ZIRP!’, arrives October 30th via Fantasy Recordings, led by the sprawling, hook-heavy new single The Fountain.

They’re calling it The New Alternative — a genre built for music’s algorithmically optimized, VC-funded, AI-assisted 2020s, where a million streams is fine, a billion is better, and a trillion isn’t off the table. On ‘ZIRP!’, DIIV finally collapse the tension between their underground roots and their pop instincts that’s shaped every record so far.

What would it mean to grow up? And glow up, too?

DIIV have always braided the harshness of shoegaze (2024’s ‘Frog In Boiling Water’) and grunge (2019’s ‘Deceiver’) with genuinely memorable pop melody — before the rest of the world had the language for it. Now, with artists like Slayyyter, Eartheater and Turnstile blowing up the old genre gatekeeping, DIIV are naming the universe they’ve been building toward all along.

Enter A. G. Cook

Produced by pop architect A. G. Cook (Caroline Polachek, Charli XCX), ‘ZIRP!’ takes its title from the zero interest rate policies that fueled a decade of failed startups and turned everyone into an atomized “user.” The themes of ‘Frog In Boiling Water’ — Palantir, societal collapse, the endless streaming hamster wheel — return here, but lighter, sharper, more pop than ever. Opener and lead single The Fountain pairs the band’s signature sprawl and squall with a jolting rhythmic guitar section built for arenas.

It was in the spirit of destroying & rebuilding their demos, Screamadelica-style, into a finished product, but that hybrid, half-remix approach felt completely wrong to me.

Cook says he ended up going the opposite direction — studying the band’s live show obsessively and pushing for live drums before songs were even finished, favoring guitar pedals over computers wherever possible. After several rounds of that process, ‘ZIRP!’ emerged as both concept and mantra: equal parts utopian and dystopian.
