Some bands just don’t quit — and thank god for that. Teenage Fanclub, the Scottish indie-rock lifers who’ve been quietly perfecting warm, melodic guitar pop for nearly four decades, are back with a new single and video, There Was You. It’s the second preview of their upcoming album ‘Do Not Dare To Dream’, landing October 9 via Merge Records.
As the album opener, There Was You is a classic “I was lost but now I’m found” moment — waltzing rhythm, warm guitars, and one of those melodies that sticks with you before the second listen. It follows lead single Day in the Sun, continuing the rollout with the same easy confidence that’s defined the band’s sound for thirty-plus years.
The Album
‘Do Not Dare To Dream‘ is Teenage Fanclub’s 13th studio album, following up 2023’s acclaimed Nothing Lasts Forever. It finds core songwriters Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley — joined by longtime bandmates Euros Childs, Francis Macdonald, and David McGowan — leaning further into collaboration, letting songs take shape in the room rather than arriving fully arranged.
The title comes from Blake’s own I Do Not Dare To Dream, and it sets the tone: a gentle pushback against empty optimism, without tipping into despair. As Blake puts it:
“Those ‘dare to dream’ sentiments are kind of ridiculous. I don’t think the world works that way.”
McGinley adds a bit of balance to that outlook:
“We can still be cheerful and optimistic in the face of things not being great.”
Recorded on a Remote Scottish Island
The band tracked the album at Black Bay Studio on Great Bernera — their most remote recording location yet, surrounded by crashing sea and ancient ruins. They made good use of what the studio had lying around too, including a Domus church organ (front and center on Over And Over) and a stack of synths, giving the record its warm, immersive textures.
Blake and McGinley sum up the decades-spanning perspective best:
“I think what happens is you just move from one thing into the next and before you know it, 30 years have passed.”
“Yeah, it’s been a while since we started doing this thing we do, but to us it feels like no time at all. In the place where we made the record people would have been singing thousands of years ago. Life is short, but music is eternal.”
The Critics Are Already On Board
“It’s just so comforting to see a band that’s been around as long as the Scottish indie-rock lifers stay so consistent. (Other members of this club: Dinosaur Jr., Yo La Tengo, Built To Spill, fellow Scots Belle & Sebastian.) Apparently some things can retain (and even gain) quality with time.” — Stereogum
“The simple joys of writing songs and sharing them remain the driving forces for indie pop veterans Teenage Fanclub.” — PopMatters
“Timeless pop classicism…” — Uncut
