Spoiler: It’s Not What You Think

Hull’s angriest, queerest punk trio WENCH! are back with a bang (and a scream, and a mighty bassline) on their debut EP, cheekily titled ‘Relaxing Rain Sounds For Baby Sleep,’ out now via Warren Records. Don’t be fooled by the name — this is not the soundtrack to a sleepy-time meditation app. It’s loud, it’s raw, it’s feminist fury in four tracks.

The all-female, all-queer outfit—made up of Kit Bligh (vocals, drums), Hebe Gabel (bass, flute), and Sev Speck (guitar, backing vocals)—have made a name for themselves with their unfiltered energy and take-no-shit attitude. Blending riot grrrl punk, alt-rock, and flashes of pop chaos, WENCH! bring their full force on this EP, channeling rage, vulnerability, and community into every note.

Their debut single Shreds introduced them as a fiery new voice in Hull’s music scene, and ‘Relaxing Rain Sounds For Baby Sleep’ builds on that momentum with even more bite. Produced by Adam Pattrick, the EP is messy in all the best ways—confident, cathartic, and gloriously uncompromising.

Let’s break it down:

  • Yeti Legs kicks things off with a rallying cry against all the stuff we’ve been taught to just put up with. It’s sarcastic and self-aware, alternating between melodic licks and guttural howls, calling out the societal conditioning that asks us to smile through the discomfort.
  • Heavy Feather rips into performative allyship while celebrating queer identity in all its power. It’s a sonic middle finger to fake feminists and a heartfelt embrace for those still figuring it all out.
  • Be Tame is for anyone who’s ever been told to tone it down, sit still, or “be nice.” It’s chaotic, unapologetic, and defiant—embracing the so-called “unladylike” with open arms and a wild, cathartic roar.
  • Closing track Vincent Van Knob gets straight to the point. It’s loud, shouty, and takes no prisoners as it goes after those dudes who think harassing women is just a bit of harmless fun. The chorus is pure fire—built for shouting along in a sweaty pit full of like-minded misfits.

WENCH! say it best: “The EP is truly ‘Wenchy’… raw, unfiltered & certainly not polite! We’re honoured to share it with the world & hope it’ll ignite the feminist fire in those who listen.”

Their mission is clear: make punk for the pissed off, the left out, and the done-being-nice. It’s music for the weirdos, the queers, the angry girls, and anyone who’s tired of playing along.

Catch WENCH! live at Hull’s Humber Street Sesh on August 25, with more shows dropping soon (including a secret bank holiday weekend appearance). This is just the beginning—get on board, or get out of the way.
