New album ‘Victory Lap (#23)’ out May 9 via Million Stars
NYC album release show – May 31 @ Mercury Lounge
NYC’s own DIY dynamo Alex Orange Drink just unleashed Supa Dilla Cancer Killah, the final single before his new album ‘Victory Lap (#23)’ lands on May 9 via Million Stars, the label run by indie legend Conor Oberst.
This latest track isn’t just another song — it’s an anti-cancer battle cry. Alex wrote and recorded it smack in the middle of intense chemo and radiation treatments, turning a brutal experience into something strangely joyful, fierce, and, in his words, “almost cartoon-like.” Oh, and the cherry on top? His stepmother Sadhis Rivas — a Nicaraguan powerhouse who’s survived a revolution, an earthquake, and cancer herself — joins him on the track, singing a beautiful, defiant chorus in Spanish.

About the song, Alex shares: “It’s inspired by ’90s gangster rap and dedicated to J Dilla. It’s an anti-cancer anthem — loud, raw, and a little surreal. Sadhis sings the outro, reminding us to dance hard, sing louder, and basically tell cancer to screw off.”
Her Spanish outro translates to: “Forget about cancer and sing this song / Forget your problems and dance with passion (killer!) / Don’t think about cancer and sing this song / Don’t think about cancer and live for life.”
Supa Dilla Cancer Killah follows a streak of other raw and real singles like Everything Is Broken, Queen Victoria (featuring Conor Oberst), and The Future’s A Riot, which came paired with a moving music video featuring footage from Alex’s first week of cancer treatment.
Alex’s journey has been getting love from outlets like Stereogum, Northern Transmissions, BrooklynVegan, Our Culture, The Hard Times, and more.
A Little About ‘Victory Lap (#23)’
This is Alex’s third solo record — and maybe his most personal yet. After a sold-out Bowery Ballroom show in 2023, Alex was hit with a life-altering diagnosis: Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare cancer affecting his salivary gland. Rather than step back, he leaned in, turning pain into power across 10 unflinching, anthemic tracks.
His past solo work (Everything Is Broken Maybe That’s OK, Babel On) already showed his chops outside of The So So Glos, but Victory Lap (#23) feels like its own raw, raging universe.
Beyond his music, Alex has been a huge part of NYC’s DIY scene, co-founding iconic spaces like Market Hotel and Shea Stadium. He’s also lived with Homocystinuria — a rare genetic disorder requiring a strict diet and, fittingly, a daily orange-flavoured medication that inspired his alias.
Last year, you might’ve heard his voice on Bright Eyes’ Rainbow Overpass or caught his writing on their latest album. Now, it’s Alex’s turn to shine.
Come celebrate the album live at Mercury Lounge on May 31 — with special guests including GYMSHORTS and a few surprise friends. You won’t want to miss it.
