London-based alternative duo beachtown reveal Can’t, the latest track to be lifted from their forthcoming EP ‘UNSAYABLE’, out 12th May via Young Poet. Watch the visualizer for Can’t via YouTube below.

Consisting of Menorca born Zaine Masoliver and British/Danish Fred Cowan, together the pair blend oddball pop sensibilities with elements of shoegaze, indie and dream pop whilst intermittently paying tribute to Zaine’s Hispanic upbringing with bossa nova influenced breaks alongside vocal textures which wouldn’t be out of place on ‘Pet Sounds’.

Taking cues from experimental innovators like Dijon, Mura Masa and Eyedress, new single Can’t stands as the duo’s most direct and accomplished release to date. Written in one magical day, the pair followed their instincts with this one. “It was a really smooth song to make and everything we tried just felt right,” they say.

Built from a lively drum sample, which had to be recreated as the original beat was lost, Can’t captures a sense of anticipation and dread as if stuck in a state of purgatory that just keeps getting extended because you can’t be honest with yourself, or the people around you.

Fred explains “When the riff first came about I was going through some stress, such as school pressures and worrying about the future, and I remember it was hard to focus on both maintaining my own mental health and maintaining certain relationships at the same time.”

Zaine adds “When writing “Can’t”, life felt very fleeting and I had a sense I was constantly trying to catch up with something that lay ahead of me. Lyrically a lot of the words just naturally came to me, it’s about keeping feelings inside and bottling them up and letting things get worse because you aren’t saying what’s on your mind.”

More about beachtown?

beachtown was formed in 2019, during a chance meeting in the queue for a gig in Kingston, South London when the search for a lost ticket turned into a conversation. Building a world together in their bedroom studios, their DIY ambition is catapulting the pair into exciting new spaces.

Can’t follows recent singles Toybox and Unsure; two bold, eccentric cuts in their own right with the later securing them their first playlist cover on Spotify’s an alternative future. Next on the duo’s agenda is the release of their second EP ‘UNSAYABLE’ out 12 May, continuing to build on their library of found sounds, as well as their first live appearances in London, which are sure to further cement beachtown as ones to watch.

Since signing to Young Poet, beachtown have received key press support from The Line Of Best Fit, The Independent, Dummy Mag, La Blogotheque and more. They’ve won admiration from tastemakers at BBC Introducing London and Kent (Jess Iszatt, Abbie McCarthy), featured on Tom Robinson’s “Introducing Mixtape” on BBC6 Music and they earned a place on Amazing Radio’s C-List. The duo have already featured on the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds UK & IE playlist and have received further support across New Music Friday UK, anti pop, The Other list, Hot New Bands, lo-fi indie and Today’s Indie Rock.
