Since releasing their 2018 LP ‘Gravity Pairs,‘ New York-based duo Beacon have toured throughout North America (with Nick Murphy), shared a series of stripped-back studio sessions (watch), and released a remix album featuring edits by Elkka, Helios, and CRi (listen). Now, they begin 2020 with a run of European live dates as well as the release of a piano meditation on the Pixies classic Wave of Mutilation. Listen to the cover version via YouTube below.

Beacon introduced covers into their writing process as a way of breaking out of melodic patterns and discovering new sonic spaces within the songwriting craft of others. Inspired by the slower tempo and phrasing of Pixies’ UK Surf B-side, showcasing the mutability of this song as enacted by the Pixies themselves, Beacon amplify the playfully morbid surreality of Black Francis’ lyrics, said to be about the phenomenon in the 1980s of Japanese businessmen taking their own lives after their businesses failed.

We wanted it to feel uncanny and have the recognition of the original unfold slowly for the listener rather than being obvious or immediate.”
