Street Art Scene – Hamburg, Germany

Recently I visited Hamburg to check out the city and see how the street art scene compared to the scene in Berlin. If you have ever visited Berlin, you know that the street art there is so amazing, and Hamburg was unfortunately not quite as vibrant but still had some interesting pieces. Although, on my visit to the city and search for interesting works, I discovered a number of cool pieces while walking through Hamburg’s streets. Here’s what I found.

Banksy visited the Hamburg in 2002 creating a number famous pieces, but only one is remaining. It has been placed under plexiglass in an attempt to protect it. In my opinion, this definitely takes away from the piece and part of the coolness of street art is they are not permanent.

Dudes Factory: Street Fashion / Art / Design

Don’t let the name Dudes Factory deceive you, this store is 100% cool, bringing a new concept to skate / street wear.

Every month, they bring in new artists to create and collaborate on collections for the Dudes Factory design arsenal.  This results in a creative fusion of fashion, art and design that is both dynamic and ever changing. The physical storefront is a visual playground with 2-D images, videos, and 3-D art pieces.

In my opinion, their webstore brings the most innovative part to the Dudes Factory concept. When they bring in new artists also design ‘components’ from these collections that become the raw materials for the LAB, Dudes Factory’s online software where customers are able to ‘remix’ and individualize Dudes’ products. In the laboratory, you can really customize t-shirts and hoodies by picking the garment, then selecting a graphic from the library, then resizing it. It doesn’t stop there, you can then add further graphics, icons and personalized typography to your layout. Check out the Dudes Factory LAB here.

Street Art Scene – Berlin, Germany

Since the reunification of Berlin, the city has become one of Europe’s top street art locations. Interesting / unique post-communist locations, cheap rent and derelict buildings gave rise to a vibrant street art scene in Berlin. The most interesting areas to view street art in the city include Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain.

On my visit to the city and search for interesting works, I discovered a number of cool pieces while walking through Berlin’s streets. They are included below and when possible, I referenced the artist and location under the picture.

Banksy visited the Berlin in 2004 and created a number of works in Mitte and Kreuzberg (you can see a map here) but unfortunately most have since been removed. As well, a very well-known street artist in Berlin is Prost. His most famous character is the smiling face seen around the city. There is an exhibit of his work at the West Berlin Gallery titled The Street Never Ends, The Art Never Dies through Sept 17, 2011.

The Stroke Art Fair, which had its Berlin debut last October, is a new fair for street art that drew thousands of visitors and street artists from all over the world.

Film Addiction: A Film By Street Artist Banksy

Banksy has a movie – yes, the street art mystery man is releasing his debut film about street art (of course). I was expecting that this would end up being an elaborate stunt for the sake if art, but the movie was premiered as scheduled this past weekend. Banksy’s debut film titled “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, had its international premiere on Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival. “Exit Through The Gift Shop” is due to hit cinemas throughout the UK on March 5th 2010. Banksy keeps his identity hidden throughout the movie – which is not surprising since his mystique is part of what makes him so interesting as an artist. You can find out more about his work on his website – http://banksy.co.uk/.
