Cathedrale ignites their creative spark with South Life, the fiery new single from their upcoming album ‘Poison’. Set for release on February 14, 2025, via Howlin’ Banana Records and Regarts, this track is a raw, energetic dive into the urban chaos of everyday life.
Recorded live at Chez Nini Studio in Brussels with producer Mathieu Versini, South Life brings to life the relentless struggles of the Toulouse ring road. Its lyrics vividly capture the exasperation of drivers stuck in never-ending traffic jams—especially in the downpour—while playfully skewering their less-than-stellar driving skills. Beneath the witty exterior, the song wrestles with a deeper yearning: the desire to break free from the grind of city life, even as the thought of leaving brings its own bittersweet risks of isolation and boredom.
Drawing inspiration from bands like High Vis, Institute, and Protomartyr, Cathedrale delivers a track that pulses with tension and urgency. As guitarist and vocalist Jules recalls, the spark for South Life came on a day when he witnessed utter mayhem on the Toulouse ring road. “He was completely wound up—cars were going crazy, and his anger just poured out. That raw energy became the heart of the song,” the band explains.
With four critically acclaimed albums and tours across Europe alongside acts such as Osees, Frustration, and Rendez-Vous, Cathedrale has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the French indie scene. The Toulouse-based quartet has evolved beyond the confines of garage rock and power pop, carving out a unique post-punk identity that resonates with authenticity.
Their forthcoming album ‘Poison’ represents the apex of this evolution—a collection of thirteen tension-filled tracks where razor-sharp guitars and haunting synths intertwine, creating a soundscape where shadow meets light. Recorded and mixed in Brussels, ‘Poison’ is poised to be their most introspective and richly layered record yet.
