Century Egg is a band of escape artists with a focus on playing visceral punk rock. The Halifax, Nova Scotia-based quartet have shared their new single, Mirror which completes a double A-side release following last month’s track, Moving On which found praise at CBC Songs You Need to Hear, Exclaim and more. The new double A-side, released via Forward Music Group marks the return of the band following their Bandcamp Daily and Exclaim-tipped 2021 EP, ‘Little Piece of Hair’ (watch the video for Do You Want To Dance? here). Following previous spots opening for the likes of Lido Pimienta – a self-proclaimed fan of the band with Robert Drisdelle, guitarist in Century Egg producing a track on her Polaris Prize-winning album, ‘La Papessa’ – Partner, Julie Doiron, and more, Century Egg have recently performed at M For Montreal Festival and Nova Scotia Music Week as well as headline shows in Toronto and Ottawa.
New track, Mirror turns to the Asian pop and rock artists such as Faye Wong, Jun Togawa, Spitz, Cui Jain, Pu Shu, along with the likes of Stereolab, Sheer Mag and The OBGMs for inspiration. As with Moving On, this second cut deals with depression and the general oppression in life whilst trying to find a way to preserve and push on.
Speaking about Mirror, Century Egg says: “This song is about the struggle of depression and how dark things can feel even when there are bright sides.”
Century Egg is made up of singer Shane Song, bassist/backing vocalist Matty Grace, guitarist Robert Drisdelle and drummer Megumi Yoshida. Away from Century Egg, Song works as a visual artist/video game artist, Grace plays in numerous bands including Cluttered (tipped by Laura Jane Grace of Against Me!), Drisdelle plays and arranges with Lido Pimienta (amongst other projects) and Yoshida performs in Bad Vibrations, Dog Day, Not You and more.
