Discogs releases app for iOS

One of the most anticipated segment of the Discogs 15 year anniversary is the release of their iOS app, which is available on the Apple Store now. It’s basically a reskinned version of Milkcrate, which isn’t a bad thing. I’ve been using Milkcrate for a while now, but plan to switch over to Discogs since I assume it will add functionality over time. Discogs are approaching the app in the way they approach all their projects in that the company will continue to listen and respond to the community’s requests and feedback.

The app’s beginning functionality will focus on the overwhelmingly most popular aspect of the Discogs platform: collection and wantlist, with more sorting and filtering options currently in development. For the last decade and a half, they have consistently listened to their users,  and adapted, rather than press unnecessary or superfluous features on them, and that will be the identical approach with their app.

Like Milkcrate, the app features a barcode scanner, which quickly finds a release using the iPhone’s camera, and allows a user to quickly add the correct one to their collection. This is one of my favourite things simplifies adding new records to the catalog.  Going forward, the app will make improvements to Discography filtering and sorting, offline Wantlist and Collection access, and the Discogs Marketplace integration. The app team is also investigating technology like album cover image search, and longer term there may be a VinylHub integration and push notifications for when Wantlisted items are available. The app, just like the original, well-loved platform, provides users with an even better way to streamline the trading and collecting of physical product, and continues to lead the way in that arena.
