Brighton-based feminist electropunk trio CLT DRP are delighted to announce their return with new single Ownership via Small Pond. The news comes ahead of a run of November 2021 UK tour dates supporting Svalbard and Heriot, with tickets on sale now (see below for listings).
Spending the last 18 months finding their feet as individuals and as a collective band again, the single is the first look at new material from the band since the release of their rave-reviewed debut album Without The Eyes in 2020, and sees a further evolution of their eclectic, experimental approach to fusing electronic and punk music in boundary breaking fashion.
Somewhere between EDM inspired electro-punk and quasi-satirical female pop, the new single delves deeper into their ever-changing sonic world, as guitarist Scott reveals influence from Mr. Oizo’s seminal hit Flat Beat.
Commenting on the single, vocalist Annie Dorret says: “Someone I was seeing a while back told me that they didn’t like the idea of ownership in a relationship and it stuck with me in a weird way. Ownership is such a heavy term, and it’s something that people have such a varied response to. It can be romanticized by some, totally toxic to others or valued in some situations. I’ve had unhealthy dynamics attached to it in romantic relationships, friendships and employment.”
“This feeling that your physical body, time and/or mental energy is owed to or controlled by somebody else is a pretty dominating thing. I think sometimes we internalize those feelings and attach them to our identity, I know I certainly do. This song was just a way of understanding the frustration behind those feelings and processing how to take the power back for myself I guess.”
The single comes with an official video directed and edited by Bucky Illingworth with Jared Christiansen as director of photography. Illingworth says of the visuals: “We wanted to illuminate power dynamics that are tearing apart our world. The way private property has abstracted and disoriented our cooperation with nature. The way that wage labor has dominated our bodies and our time. The way surveillance looks to feed on our minds. A call to arms to get mad at those who feel ownership of humanity and the planet. Formed in 2017, the band released their debut album ‘Without The Eyes’ on Small Pond Records in August 2020 to a surge of press and radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6music, Radio X, Riot Act Podcast, Guitar World, London In Stereo, Bristol In Stereo, Classic Rock Magazine, Fred Perry Subculture, UPSET Magazine, DORK Magazine, Louder Than War, VISIONS, New Noise Magazine, Atwood Magazine, and many more.
“Obviously we don’t make music just for the validation,” comments Dorret on the unanimous praise the band received for the record, “but it was definitely nice to feel like the album was taken well. We’re known for being a ‘live’ band, or at least that’s what they tell us, so it was cool that it still resonated on the album recordings.”
“I actually think that the new recordings emulate even more of our live sound so we’re super stoked for those to come out. Those lyrics and sounds feel so old now—we’re proud of that album, but it’s versions of ourselves that don’t totally exist in real-time anymore. We’re changing and growing every second you know?!”
