350 King Street W.
When a yakuza boss disappears his soldiers start carving a bloody path through the underworld to find out who was responsible, their search led by Kakihara (Tadanobu Asano), a grotesque, torture-loving jester with platinum hair and a gaping slash that extends his mouth into a perpetual, Joker-like grin.
Kakihara’s bloody investigation soon points towards the blood-soaked halls of Yakuza Mansion, wherein dwells a reputedly unstoppable killing machine named Ichi, a proverbial Frankenstein monster torn between sexual violence and confused innocence. Has Kakihara met his match? Or is Ichi the only one who can inflict the pain he craves?
It goes without saying that this hide-your-eyes endurance test is not for the squeamish: the Festival thoughtfully dispensed vomit bags to the first-night audience when Ichi played Midnight Madness in 2001.
