Following up on 2018’s ‘Headacher,’ Detroit-based indie rock/power pop band Extra Arms will release a brand new album titled ‘Up From Here’ on October 25 via Dadstache Records in the U.S. and Get Party Records in Canada.
According to founder and frontman Ryan Allen, formerly of Frenchkiss Records’ Thunderbirds Are Now!, this is a 22-minute concept record Allen experienced a divorce during the writing of the LP and rather than turn bitter and unreachable he wrote from about letting go, grief and acceptance.
Equal doses of power pop and punk, this is for the fan who has Jellyfish, Superchunk, Cheap Trick, and various Wipers and Ramones releases in their collection. Citing influences from Bob Mould to Superdrag to Ted Leo, there is a love of rich melody with a lot of amplification reflected on ‘Up From Here’.
Allen (vocals, guitar) is joined by guitarist Michael Gallacher, bassist Ryan Marshall, and new drummer Daniel Stover. The album was recorded in five days this past June with producer Paul Miner (Touché Amoré, New Found Glory, Thrice),

Allen had this to say about the single: “The word ‘disruptor’ started to get thrown around a lot when Uber first came out – basically a ‘to-your-door’ car service that was ‘disrupting’ the status quo set by the cab industry. Normally people view this kind of thing as ‘cool’ and innovative, but I decided to turn the concept around a bit and look at it more from the perspective of the person having to deal with the fallout of the disruption. The twist at the end is that the subject of the song – the disruptor – ends up having the table turned on them and will now have to deal with disruptions of their own. I won’t give away too much, but I was into exploring the idea of somebody basically having their whole life blown up by somebody or something, but realizing they ultimately have the upper hand in the situation. Musically, the song is pretty straight-forward and maybe the most ‘punk’ song Extra Arms has ever done. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that the opening keyboard squiggle and handclaps in the intro was inspired by ‘Bad Reputation’ by Joan Jett, who is a badass forever.”
