Fenne Lily has released her anticipated debut album, ‘On Hold’. The album was produced by Tamu Massif and James Thorpe, as well as PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish, before then being mixed by Ali Chant who Fenne first worked with on Aldous Harding’s critically acclaimed album Party, for which Fenne provided guest vocals. Not many young artists can count up a massive 20 million streams off the back of the first song they’ve ever written, but then again, not many young artists are Fenne Lily. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Laura Marling as well as the swooning sound of Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and underground 1960s psychedelic greats like Linda Perhacs, that song, Top To Toe, saw the young unknown attract global attention for her sublime songwriting ability and sharp emotional intelligence, as well as her gifted way with melody.
Now 20 years old and based in Bristol, Fenne Lily wrote the songs for ‘On Hold’ in sporadic bursts. Thematically, most of ‘On Hold’ digs into the break-up of Fenne’s first important relationship and the pain that followed. Take, for example, the album’s title track; an upbeat, Mac DeMarco inspired tribute to Fenne’s best friend Felix, who she met immediately after the break-up: “He was also really sad. So we were just sad together and He made me feel like it was OK to feel like that.”
