Seattle’s ethereal post-punk outfit Fotoform is back with their most emotionally charged album yet, ‘Grief is a Garden (Forever in Bloom),’ arriving April 18. Following their critically acclaimed ‘Horizons’ (2021), the band continues to evolve, weaving post-punk intensity with dreamy shoegaze textures.

They unveil their mesmerizing new single Grief is a Garden, accompanied by a haunting video directed by Erik Foster.

Frontwoman Kim House reflects on the song’s deeply personal meaning:

“The title track explores how grief changes over time, how it blooms, decays, and ultimately transforms us. Loss never truly leaves us; instead, it shapes who we become. The lyrics wrestle with the unknowable, the existential pull of life and death, and the connections we maintain with those we’ve lost. This album became a ritual of sitting with grief, understanding it, and finally, releasing some of its weight.”

Tragically, House’s brother Jeff passed away unexpectedly just as the band was beginning to release songs from the album. The heartbreak is woven into the fabric of Grief is a Garden, making it one of Fotoform’s most raw and intimate works to date.

An Evolution in Sound: Dreamy Melancholy Meets Post-Punk Grit

Blending lush shoegaze atmospheres with post-punk urgency, ‘Grief is a Garden (Forever in Bloom)’ is Fotoform at their finest. Kim House (vocals, bass, synths, guitar) and Geoffrey Cox (guitars) are joined by Michael Schorr (drums, ex-Death Cab for Cutie) to craft an album that explores loss, resilience, and transformation with crystalline guitars, shimmering synths, and hypnotic rhythms.

Drawing inspiration from The Cure, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, and Drab Majesty, the band also incorporates elements of classic 4AD artists like This Mortal Coil and Lush, pushing their sound into new, more intimate territory.

Fotoform has shared stages with: Film School, The Chameleons, Pink Turns Blue, Assemblage 23, Blushing, and more.
