Vancouver-based cult-rockers Frog Eyes have just dropped their latest single, Television, a Ghost in My Head, along with a captivating music video. This track comes as a taste of their highly anticipated new album, ‘The Open Up,’ set for release on March 7, 2025, via Paper Bag Records—an album already hailed by Exclaim! as one of the most anticipated Canadian releases of the year.
Television, a Ghost in My Head blends wistful indie pop with eclectic sonic textures, anchored by a striking melody and dynamic vocals from lead singer Carey Mercer. The video, a quirky montage of Mercer’s own footage featuring a playful seal lounging by a Vancouver ferry dock last fall, captures the spontaneous energy and offbeat humor that defines Frog Eyes. Mercer explains, “A ferry harbor is like an airport of endless possibilities—a hub of energy where my buddy the seal was practically putting on a show. I filmed a couple of videos, soaked in the comic vibes, and handed them off to my long-time collaborator, Derek Janzen, to piece together with my words on screen.”
The album ‘The Open Up’ marks Frog Eyes’ second release since their reformation in 2021 and is their tenth record overall—a journey that has always defied easy categorization. Recorded with raw, live energy and enhanced by electric guitar flourishes and grand piano accents, the album is a sprawling emotional journey. It marries huffy-puffy rock and roll with dreamy mid-tempo introspection, evoking echoes of 1995 emo, post-punk edginess, and even hints of blues and gothic rock, all building toward a spacious, uplifting finale.
