{"id":21060,"date":"2016-03-27T14:20:42","date_gmt":"2016-03-27T18:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=21060"},"modified":"2016-03-25T10:58:10","modified_gmt":"2016-03-25T14:58:10","slug":"dan-michaelson-coastguards-announce-new-album-new-single-undo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=21060","title":{"rendered":"Dan Michaelson and The Coastguards announce new album with new single &#8216;Undo&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards\u00a0will release their new album \u2018Memory\u2019 via\u00a0The state51 Conspiracy on May 6.\u00a0Written and produced by Dan Michaelson and mixed by Ash Workman (Metronomy, Christine and the Queens), the album was recorded at The Premises, London and will be available on CD, vinyl and as a download. \u2018Memory\u2019 is the follow up to 2014\u2019s \u00a0\u2018Distance\u2019 and the final installment in an album trilogy that commenced with \u2018Blindspot\u2019 in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The first track lifted from\u00a0the album is <em>Undo<\/em>, which will be out on April 29, 2016.\u00a0<em>Undo<\/em><b>,\u00a0<\/b>with a loving nod to Serge Gainsbourg&#8217;s\u00a0<i>Histoire de Melody Nelson<\/i><b>,<\/b>\u00a0is a snapshot of the moment when the wrong words are spoken in the heat of the moment: as they echo through the room, they can\u2019t be taken back and the distance between two people extends for miles.\u00a0<em>Undo\u00a0<\/em>takes a familiar scrap of life and places it under the microscope for a prolonged dissection. Michaelson, who admits he has <em>\u201calmost zero memory\u201d<\/em>, ponders the impact and consequence of our ability, or inability, to remember and how our recollections are often warped and reinterpreted. <em>&#8220;There&#8217;s very little I could say with any authority about my past,\u201d<\/em> he says. <em>\u201cMemory&#8217;s role in retelling a fact and slowly shaping it into a fiction without my consent, keeps rewriting my history. Songs are a way of freezing a moment recollected before it moves on without me.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From the sparse, minimal \u2018Blindspot\u2019 (2013) to the relatively more replete \u2018Distance\u2019 (2014) and concluding with \u2018Memory\u2019, the trilogy retains a type of \u2018epic minimalism\u2019 Michaelson was trying to achieve musically. <em>&#8220;I went looking\u00a0for a way to carry what I&#8217;d written. Memory is the end point of this particular story. In my small world, \u2018Blindspot\u2019 is the script, \u2018Distance\u2019 is the play, and \u2018Memory\u2019 is the widescreen movie.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Michaelson, who will perform at How The Light Gets In Festival on June 2, recently scored the music for BAFTA-winning BBC series \u2018Detectorists\u2019, starring Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards are Dan Michaelson (vocals, guitar, piano), Henry Spenner (drums), Laurie Earle (guitar, piano) and Horse (guitar).
