Listen to\u00a0Formula X\u00a0via Soundcloud below.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F304504198&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&visual=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&color=959391\"><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Led by\u00a0Cristina Martinez\u00a0(ably assisted by her faithful sideman\/husband Jon Spencer, as ever playing Flavor Flav to Cristina\u2019s Chuck D), &#8216;Brood X&#8217;\u00a0feels less like the work of a group who\u2019ve been on ice for so long, more a slithering and sludgy monster of an album, a boiling pot of hot funk keys, growling punk attack, searing blues breaks and the ground-shaking holler of Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>Having recently shared a new track in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/girlieaction.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d59aca4aeedaab429816159e&amp;id=edd7e15d17&amp;e=3a430a552a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\">\u201817\u2019<\/a>, whose dark observational poetry has already been championed by\u00a0The New York Times,\u00a0The Quietus,\u00a0SPIN\u00a0and more. Speaking of their almost two-decade gestation, Cristina explains:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>There are different broods of cicadas emerging in cyclical periods, there are 13-year cicadas and 17-year cicadas. That\u2019s what Boss Hog is like \u2013 we\u2019re operating on our own cycle. We go underground for a number of years, re-emerge, make beautiful sounds, and then go away. That\u2019s our cyclical life.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On hiatus since they finished promoting 2000\u2019s icy, wonderful \u2018Whiteout\u2019 album, Boss Hog began stirring again late in 2008 with the first of several short runs of shows. <em>\u201cWe\u2019d play a handful of shows, once a year,\u201d<\/em> Martinez remembers. <em>\u201cFestivals, the Amphetamine Reptile 25th Anniversary party, some benefit shows.\u201d<\/em> Things started getting serious a couple of years later, when the Boss Hog all-stars \u2013 Martinez, Spencer, bassist Jen Jurgensen, drummer Hollis Queens and keysman Mickey Finn \u2013 decided this reunion habit was worth committing to wax.<\/p>\n<p>Cooked up in the same Lower East Side basement where Boss Hog brewed their first blistering noiseouts, and cut at Michigan\u2019s Key Club Recording Company on the same Flickinger N32 Matrix console Sly Stone used for There\u2019s A Riot Goin\u2019 On, \u2018Brood X\u2019 is serious music for serious times, the perfect soundtrack for a necessary revolution.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year cicadas have re-awoken, and not a moment too soon. New York has changed beyond recognition and there\u2019s a buffoonish villain entering the White House, but Martinez\u2019s towering vocals and vicious, hilarious, emboldening lyrics have never sounded so sharp, nor Boss Hog so timely. Opener \u2018Billy\u2019, all brawny low-end and delirious funk organ, finds Cristina and Jon howling about \u201cThe brink of destruction!\u201d over apocalyptic beats, while Ground Control, a prismatic vision of today\u2019s Big Apple, includes the bitter observation, \u201cThis is the cost of privilege\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA lot of Cristina\u2019s lyrics on this album resonate with me more deeply since the election,\u201d<\/em> nods Spencer. <em>\u201cThey\u2019re blues songs, protest songs.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cThe songs do feel oddly relevant now,\u201d<\/em> Cristina adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/1d59aca4aeedaab429816159e\/images\/e74baf91-34b1-45e2-ba20-83a76128bf46.jpg?resize=300%2C302&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Boss Hog Brood X cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"302\" align=\"none\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brood X<\/strong><br \/>\n1.
