Toronto’s\u00a0Praises is\u00a0<\/strong>the dark electronic solo project of Beliefs’ Jesse Crowe who\u00a0announces her debut album, ‘<\/strong>In This Year: Ten of Swords,‘\u00a0<\/strong>which will be out via Hand Drawn Dracula\u00a0on\u00a0December 7th. She’s shared the album’s haunting piano driven\u00a0sound with\u00a0its first single, Love Unkind<\/em>, before embarking on a European\u00a0tour\u00a0that begins on November 10th.<\/p>\n

Praises’ ‘In This Year: Ten of Swords’\u00a0features all instruments played and self-recorded\u00a0by Jesse Crowe, with co-production\u00a0from her\u00a0longtime collaborator\u00a0Josh Korody,\u00a0whose work as a producer includes celebrated releases from\u00a0Dilly Dally, Partner, and F***ked Up.<\/p>\n

Praises\u00a0arrived at a time when\u00a0Crowe\u00a0was struggling to find an outlet for her most personal demons. The project was created as\u00a0a quiet conversation on\u00a0the love, loss, and lessons that can’t quite fit within the public forum of a collaborative band. With songs coded in life’s stories, she\u00a0invites\u00a0friends and lovers to find lines encrypted in the lyrics that point directly at them. Deeply personal, yet highly fictionalized.<\/p>\n

Over the years since Praises’ origins, Crowe has been learning and growing her musical palette\u00a0from solo guitar\u00a0to full band and now has expanded to feature piano, modular programming,\u00a0and hardware synths. She has also moved forward to self-production, with rhythmic additions and production nods to her Beliefs bandmate\u00a0Korody,\u00a0who\u00a0added texture and structure to the album via modular synth. With\u00a0influences ranging from Nick Cave to Portishead, Praises pulls from both a masculine and feminine struggle to bring the torment back into the piano where it belongs.<\/p>\n
