Throughout the album, surrealistic idioms and demented earworms surface unexpectedly, riding on a current of oddly hooky, destabilizing melodies and grooves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>SCATTERHEAD<\/em> lyric video brings several AI typography experiments to life\u2014neural vector fonts adapted from a recent&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=c0594f0d8f&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Google Brain research paper<\/a>&nbsp;and low-res, morphing bit fonts created with a custom tool that YACHT will reveal more information about next month\u2014against a background of jittering bodies generated using a human pose estimation model called&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=6cc2962efe&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">DensePose.<\/a>&nbsp;YACHT is adapting advanced research science to their pop presentation and doing it all from their home studio using&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=979bedadaf&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">beta software<\/a>&nbsp;and minimal resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band&#8217;s frenetic sound is toned down on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=317d69dc43&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\"><em>(Downtown) Dancing<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;a scotch-taped disco track with an anxious, funky bass groove that Alexis Taylor of&nbsp;Hot Chip&nbsp;calls a <em>&#8220;nimble sprightly chugger,&#8221;<\/em> already in heavy rotation on KCRW, KEXP, and BBC Radio 6, among other tastemaking radio stations worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Chain Tripping&#8217; \u2014 the band&#8217;s seventh LP and third for DFA \u2014 was recorded between Marfa, Texas and the band&#8217;s home in Los Angeles. The ten songs are unlike anything YACHT has ever made: pop experiments from a sideways dimension coaxed into their studio through a portal opened by machine intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;AI and Machine Learning represent a revolution in music equivalent to the introduction of the synthesizer or the beginning of laptop music. We&#8217;ve been a band long enough to watch technology overwrite our assumptions many times, and felt compelled to bring these new tools into our life,&#8221;<\/em> explains YACHT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>YACHT (an acronym for &#8220;Young Americans Challenging High Technology&#8221;) is Claire L. Evans, Jona Bechtolt, and Rob Kieswetter. For &#8216;Chain Tripping,&#8217; the trio invented their own working method, at the intersection of DIY and high-tech: they used neural networks to break their patterns apart into infinite variations, which they <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">re-assembled<\/g> into new songs that they then learned, performed, and recorded live. Rather than rely on any single tool, they brought together several distinct AI processes to generate lyrics (Char-RNN), musical data (MusicVAE), raw audio (SampleRNN), and instrumentation (a &#8220;neural synthesizer&#8221; called the NSynth). They were inspired by the long history of generative composition, from William S. Burroughs&#8217; cut-up writing method to David Bowie&#8217;s custom &#8220;Verbasizer&#8221; lyrics software from the &#8217;90s. Using the framework of this album, YACHT was able to unite a disparate group of artists from around the world to showcase the state of the art in AI-assisted typography, lyrics, composition, audio, video, instrumentation, and photography. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborators include artist&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=0ca778a094&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Ross Goodwin<\/a>, &#8220;<g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">neurographer<\/g>&#8221;&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=a5d70974a0&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Mario Klingemann<\/a>, programmer and poet&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=84f7050c8b&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Allison Parrish<\/a>, senior research scientists at&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=57fa468025&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s Magenta<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=09bf0e8c49&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Project<\/a>, and the New Zealand-based visual artist&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.us15.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=af8eade87b8372a2cb09b23db&amp;id=d09cde049a&amp;e=230214dab5\" target=\"_blank\">Tom White<\/a>, who used an AI &#8220;perception engine&#8221; to create a suite of screen-printed computer abstractions for&nbsp;&#8216;Chain Tripping&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;All of this experimentation would be meaningless if it didn&#8217;t result in something larger than the sum of its parts,&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em>explains YACHT.&nbsp;<em>&#8220;This album challenged us in unexpected ways, opened new dialogues, and ultimately touches something deep about who we are. This is what technology can do it if it&#8217;s wielded with love, in a spirit of self-discovery.
