{"id":34235,"date":"2020-05-11T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-11T21:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=34235"},"modified":"2020-05-09T11:44:12","modified_gmt":"2020-05-09T15:44:12","slug":"zoon-shares-new-single-video-light-prism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=34235","title":{"rendered":"Zoon shares new single + video \u2018Light Prism\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zoon\u00a0has shared another new single, <em>Light Prism<\/em> lifted\u00a0from his pristinely created\u00a0&#8216;moccasin-gaze&#8217; debut LP,\u00a0\u2018Bleached Wavves\u2019 set\u00a0for release\u00a0on\u00a0June 19, 2020 via\u00a0Paper Bag Records.\u00a0In the\u00a0Ojibway language, the word\u00a0Zoongide\u2019ewin<em>\u00a0<\/em>means \u201cbravery, courage, the Bear Spirit.\u201d\u00a0So,\u00a0Daniel Monkman adopted<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Zoon\u00a0as his musical name-sake. The\u00a0Hamilton-based musician has spent the better part of his 28 years overcoming\u00a0such adversities as racism, poverty and addiction. Watch the video <em>Light Prism<\/em> video via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cm6ZiOqn_FU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With&nbsp;<em>Light Prism<\/em>, Daniel&#8217;s intentions were to be&nbsp;gentle. &#8220;<em>I didn\u2019t want the song to have a chorus with a vocal melody so&nbsp;I created a sample from scratch, spliced it up and reversed it to create an abstract instrumental melody.&#8221;<\/em> The song tracks a memory collage for Daniel that pulls from his time spent around Turtle Island and parts of his life spent in Selkirk, Manitoba &#8211; a rough, prison town&nbsp;that was heavily effected by drugs, gangs and the untimely death of some of his peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Light Prism<\/em> is also about reflection and being able to put things to rest. \u201c<em>When it came time to properly record guitars and textures, I wanted to be easy on myself. I realized that during my journey down the \u2018spiral staircase\u2019 I was very harsh with myself, so throughout the album I made the music very vulnerable and soft.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what started out as a video shoot turned into the hiring&nbsp;of a bass player. Director Drew Rutty notes: &#8220;<em>When we shot the footage for the video, I was not a part of the band. However over the course of editing and adding a shifting pool of colour and light to the footage we had,&nbsp;Dan&nbsp;asked me to join the band as bassist.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On his debut album,&nbsp;\u2018Bleached Wavves\u2019 Zoon&nbsp;paints a message of hope and fortitude, lessons he learned studying the Seven Grandfather teachings after experiencing the lowest point of his life and channeling it all through the shoegaze filter with&nbsp;nods of&nbsp;inspiration to one of his favourite and formative bands,&nbsp;My Bloody Valentine. The creation of the LP was a testament to Daniel&#8217;s ability to reverse engineer with minimal gear (his guitar and a digital delay pedal)&nbsp;and recording at his home&nbsp;the intricate sounds and layers of music&nbsp;texture he heard in his head. He was sometimes forced to wait days or weeks to return to working on songs, this patience and&nbsp;reality of &#8216;waiting&#8217; currently something&nbsp;the entire world is similarly and collectively experiencing right now.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mcusercontent.com\/848db9d859c7bee4231539531\/images\/b39606d5-8fe0-43c7-8052-ee4a72168a06.jpg?ssl=1\" alt=\"Zoon Bleached Wavves cover artwork\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018<strong>Bleached Wavves\u2019 track list<\/strong><br>1. In his teens he was victimized for his First Nations heritage, which led to him abusing drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. His best friend died of an overdose; he nearly followed him on multiple occasions.
