\u201cIt was spring, 1999.\u00a0New Bomb Turks\u00a0had\u00a0just\u00a0returned\u00a0from\u00a0their\u00a0first tour of Australia\u00a0in a suspended animation. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u00a0soon\u00a0procured\u00a0ace drumsman, dessert aficionado\u00a0[not a typo], and all-around great guy,\u00a0Sam Brown. It suddenly felt like a brand new\u00a0beast, but they\u00a0had an album to deliver\u00a0forthwith, and nary a new song in sight!\u00a0Nails were chomped to the cuticle,\u00a0empty\u00a0beer cans sat in the corner\u00a0mocking us…Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes (or at least like a bartender finding another unopened\u00a0bottle of mezcal\u00a0at last call),\u00a0New Bomb\u00a0Turks\u00a0soared\u00a0again. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within\u00a0four months (May-August 1999), Sam\u00a0slipped\u00a0right into the NBT stool, 12 new songs were cooked up easy\u00a0as fryin\u2019 an egg, and\u00a0they\u00a0were back\u00a0on the road with the\u00a0Hellacopters\u00a0to\u00a0hashthose\u00a0new\u00a0ones\u00a0into place.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time\u00a0the band\u00a0got to\u00a0Jim Diamond\u2019s\u00a0Ghetto Recorders\u00a0studio in Detroit\u00a0\u2013\u00a0his rep\u00a0revving\u00a0up\u00a0from\u00a0production jobs\u00a0with the\u00a0curdled cream of that Detroit trash-rock scene (Clone Defects, Detroit Cobras,\u00a0Dirtbombs, White\u00a0Stripes, Andre Williams)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0New Bomb\u00a0Turks were piqued\u00a0like a baby\u00a0screamin\u2019 for\u00a0a\u00a0higher push on\u00a0a\u00a0swing set.\u00a0Over four days and nights,\u00a0the band\u00a0enjoyed their\u00a0easiest and most fun recording session\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the only break being a jaunt over to a bar\u00a0to see a reunited\u00a0Real Kids, their first show\u00a0in\u00a0years, which\u00a0floored the band and only\u00a0added more mezcal to the fire.\u00a0Final mixes\u00a0were left\u00a0to Jim\u00a0Diamond,\u00a0and\u00a0by the time\u00a0he forwarded them to\u00a0the band,\u00a0overdub\u00a0ideas had hatched, and\u00a0about half the\u00a0record was\u00a0remixed with local studio wiz,\u00a0Jeff Graham,\u00a0in Columbus. A middle ground\u00a0was\u00a0eventually\u00a0found, and what resulted was\u00a0\u2018Nightmare Scenario\u2019\u00a0(Epitaph Records, 2000)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the\u00a0fifth\u00a0album in their six\u00a0album\/three compilation catalog, and the one\u00a0the band\u00a0believe is their best.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like every band ever, the years have supplied moments of mixing rumination.\u00a0So\u00a0last year, when\u00a0the\u00a0band\u00a0saw the 20th\u00a0anniversary of\u00a0Nightmare Scenario\u00a0right\u00a0up\u00a0on\u00a0their\u00a0ass,\u00a0they\u00a0asked Jim Diamond if he had his original mixes lying around his palatial estate. He found\u00a0them on a DAT (look it up, kids) tucked underneath a pile of\u00a0professional\u00a0recording\u00a0deck\u00a0manuals (i.e.,old\u00a0MAD\u00a0mags). Lo and behold,\u00a0they were even more ripping and burning and stinging than remembered.\u00a0There was the 20th\u00a0birthday idea,\u00a0screamin\u2019 like\u00a0a\u00a0brat!\u00a0So here you have the original mixes\u00a0of\u00a0Nightmare Scenario\u00a0that\u00a0Jim Diamond\u00a0finished\u00a0in November 1999, ensconced\u00a0deep\u00a0in his\u00a0legendary, now torn-down Detroit digs.\u00a0Ain\u2019t saying it\u2019s better than the original, just\u00a0leaner and meaner.\u00a0But don\u2019t take our word for it\u00a0\u2013\u00a0take yours when you\u2019re screamin\u2019 along too!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
