{"id":35560,"date":"2021-02-13T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-13T17:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=35560"},"modified":"2021-02-13T10:11:14","modified_gmt":"2021-02-13T15:11:14","slug":"teketeke-shares-meikyu-single-announces-debut-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=35560","title":{"rendered":"TEKE::TEKE shares \u2018Meikyu\u2019 single + announces debut album"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Seven-piece Japanese psych-rock band&nbsp;TEKE::TEKE&nbsp;announced their debut album&nbsp;\u2018Shirushi,\u2019 which will be out&nbsp;May 7&nbsp;via&nbsp;Kill Rock Stars, along with a performance at&nbsp;SXSW Online&nbsp;March 16-20.&nbsp;The band also shared cinematic new&nbsp;single&nbsp;&amp;&nbsp;video&nbsp;for <em>Meikyu<\/em>. The video was animated by the group\u2019s guitarist Serge Nakauchi-Pelletier along with vocalist and visual artist Maya Kuroki.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;When plans with a hired animator fell through, Maya and I decided to take things into our own hands,\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;Nakauchi-Pelletier says. Kuroki adds,&nbsp;<em>\u201cI&#8217;ll make some drawings or paintings and then use whatever tools we have, learn new software on the spot and ways of working as we go.\u2019\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Meikyu<\/em> (\u201clabyrinth\u201d in Japanese) cuts to the chase with ferocious guitar and bass above a raw tribal beat, with distant blows of flute and trombone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Musically, we wanted a fast-paced repetitive pattern that would have a hypnotic and unnerving effect,<\/em>\u201d the band explains. Kuroki continues,&nbsp;<em>\u201cthe song tells the story of a young character trying to escape the grasp of a twisted spirit that took the form of a labyrinthe-like mansion in a psychedelic atmosphere, slightly inspired by visuals from Japanese art-horror flick \u2018Hausu.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch the video for <em>Meikyu<\/em> via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/90j72DhZ5jQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Shirushi\u2019 (\u201csign of big changes to come\u201d) was inspired by the Japanese practice of&nbsp;<em>kintsugi<\/em>, the art of mending broken pottery by fusing the pieces back together with seams of gold, silver, or platinum lacquer.&nbsp;<em>\u201cThere\u2019s always something hopeful that comes after destruction,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>Nakauchi-Pelletier explains.&nbsp;<em>\u201cNext comes rebirth, and we get to learn again.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>The album glues classic Japanese balladry, surf rock, psychedelia, and more together into a set of songs that play like soundtracks to a wildly eccentric epic film saga. The band incorporates traditional instruments, influences from \u201860\u2019s\/70s Japanese soundtracks, and the sentimental balladry of Japanese&nbsp;<em>enka<\/em>&nbsp;&#8211; yet&nbsp;<em>Shirushi<\/em>manages to sound as if it comes from some distant future.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>Lead single&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/girlieaction.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=1d59aca4aeedaab429816159e&amp;id=ec06a41ba8&amp;e=3a430a552a\"><em>Kala Kala<\/em><\/a> perfectly encapsulates this refusal to be contained, building from an expansive ambience to an elephantine instrumental hook, Kuroki\u2019s voice darting over the top. \u201c<em>The Japanese language allows for visual, colorful poetry, and the lyrics tell a story with a lot of different colors, strong vibes, and emotional themes,<\/em>\u201d Kuroki says. In that way, each individual track plays out like a lost classic soundtrack with its own genre and storyline, even for those who may not have the benefit of the literal translation of Kuroki\u2019s lyrics. A trained actor and visual artist, Kuroki\u2019s place at the front of the stage for TEKE::TEKE masterfully amplifies their already dramatic arrangements.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>After initially forming as a tribute band for Japanese guitar legend&nbsp;Takeshi<strong> <\/strong>Terauchi, TEKE::TEKE learned that they had to tear up their surf-tinged covers and build something new. Since then, the Montreal-based seven-piece have expanded their already wide scope into a dazzling journey through classic Japanese balladry and Brazillian psychedelia alike.
