The single is lifted from Graham&#8217;s much-anticipated album\u00a0\u2018Second Lives,\u2019 which features\u00a0his ensemble\u00a0STRATA, and\u00a0is due out\u00a0 May\u00a07th via London analogue specialists\u00a0Gearbox Records.<br><br>The forthcoming album was co-produced by legendary 4-time Grammy Award-winning\u00a0producer\u00a0Hugh Padgham, who is renowned for his work with a wide-range of seminal artists such as\u00a0Phil Collins, XTC, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney and many, many more. Despite Hugh Padgham-produced records tallying stratospheric sales and streaming\u00a0figures, \u2018Second Lives\u2019 marks the first new material he has worked on in almost a decade.\u00a0<br><br>A band leading the surge of new Scottish jazz artists into the UK scene, STRATA is made up of some of Scotland&#8217;s most exciting musical proponents. Led by Graham, the band features:\u00a0pianist\u00a0Fergus McCreadie, whose critically acclaimed new solo album just came out via Edition Records; guitarist\u00a0Joe Williamson, who was named Young Scottish Jazz Musician Of The Year in 2018 and leads hard-hitting 5-piece Animal Society; rising Trombonist\u00a0Liam Shortall, who leads jazz collective\u00a0corto.alto; saxophonist\u00a0Harry Weir, who also leads self-proclaimed &#8220;doom-jazz&#8221; outfit AKU!; and\u00a0renowned bassist\u00a0Mark Hendry.<br><br>The band&#8217;s latest single <em>Legion<\/em> sees them combining rambunctious, semi-free sax and piano riffing with a frenetic rhythm section that drives the track with an almost breathless intensity. The track channels elements of the UK jazz scene but is very much woven into Graham and his ensemble&#8217;s\u00a0ability to flex and warp their instrumental dynamics to create something entirely unique. This ethic came from Costello\u2019s involvement in the Scottish DIY \/ indie scene, growing up touring all over Europe with noise rock and psych bands, and experiencing the amazing warmth and breadth of the continental independent music scene. It was his formal studies in jazz that then led to the conception of STRATA &#8211; a band that would bring the two worlds together.<br><br>2019 brought the release of their debut album \u2018OBELISK\u2019, which was nominated for the prestigious Scottish Album of the Year Award and saw the band named as one of Jazzwise&#8217;s Ones To Watch. As well as earning plaudits across a wide array of press and radio, the album also led to\u00a0the group\u2019s signing to London label Gearbox Records (Binker and Moses, Abdullah Ibrahim, Theon Cross, Sarathy Korwar, Chihei Hatakeyama, Bastien Keb), who they also released two standalone singles with last year.\u00a0<br><br>Whereas \u2018OBELISK\u2019 was largely intended for open interpretation for the listener, the new album \u2018Second Lives\u2019 is far more inward facing. Speaking on this more personal direction,\u00a0Graham says\u00a0<em>&#8220;my evolution as a person aligns with my evolution as a musician.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0The inspiration and wider themes of \u2018Second Lives\u2019 sit with thoughts of identity, heritage, and Stoicism, as well as the theme of overcoming inner challenges &#8211; what you face and the process you go through to get to the other side. That latter narrative runs all throughout the album, from start to finish, and could be seen as the greater theme, with some pieces also exploring those initial concepts.<br><br>The subject of heritage is also highly important to the album. Graham has Burmese-Indian ancestry on his mother\u2019s side and has been exploring his family tree: \u201c<em>My mum found a photo of her \u201cNana\u201d recently and sent it to me. She was an entirely different ethnicity from me, wearing clothes I\u2019d never seen a family member wear, and yet we saw a remarkable resemblance down the family tree to my mum and then to me. Many other people around the world will have similar stories, and I just find it all fascinating.\u201d<\/em><br><br>As there is no singing or lyrics, the music ultimately expresses Graham&#8217;s interpretation of how these themes feel. As a result, \u2018Second Lives\u2019 finds his compositions more texturally Daedalian and stylistically experimental than ever before. From the multi-faceted Reichian workout <em>Impetu<\/em>, right\u00a0through to the gentle yet pensive <em>Circularity<\/em>, the album is filled with high-energy polyrhythms, improvisation and borderless musical exploration.
