It sees\u00a0Immersion\u00a0(aka\u00a0Malka Spigel\u00a0and\u00a0Colin Newman\u00a0of influential groups\u00a0Minimal Compact\u00a0and\u00a0Wire\u00a0respectively) collaborating with some of the finest left field artists of our era:\u00a0Tarwater,\u00a0Laetitia Sadier (of Stereolab),\u00a0Ulrich Schnauss\u00a0and\u00a0Scanner.\u00a0The debut album\u00a0\u2018Nanocluster Vol. 1\u2019 will be released\u00a0on\u00a0September 4th\u00a0via\u00a0swim~ (<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/b19jpf\/3m9fkn\/fsdoll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pre-order<\/a>).\u00a0<br><br>Immersion\u00a0and\u00a0Laetitia Sadier<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>have shared the official video for\u00a0<em>Riding The Wave<\/em>, the latest track to be lifted from\u00a0\u2018Nanocluster Vol. 1\u2019. We hope to illustrate that in the video through a combination of immersive beauty &amp; humour. The footage was shot in Cornwall &amp; Brighton, mainly by Malka and we put it together here.<br><br>In terms of the music it\u2019s an atypical piece from an atypical album. Laetitia came to this project wanting to project something else besides being &#8220;the singer&#8221; and this song exemplifies that as Laetitia provided the chord sequence and pace of the piece through the guitars while we provided the vocal melodies. It has a template that we would never come up with in a million years! With the production the main idea was to keep it light &amp; flowing.\u201d<br><\/em><br><em>Riding the Wave<\/em> is available now on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/b19jpf\/3m9fkn\/r5foll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/b19jpf\/3m9fkn\/7xgoll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple Music<\/a>.\u00a0<br><br>Last month Immersion shared<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>Skylarks<\/em> which was made with\u00a0Ulrich Schnauss<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0The track can be streamed at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/b19jpf\/3m9fkn\/3iioll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/b19jpf\/3m9fkn\/jbjoll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spotify<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/b19jpf\/3m9fkn\/z3joll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple Music<\/a>.\u00a0Colin Newman says, \u201c<em>Ulrich Schnauss is not only a highly talented artist but also an amazing human being. The music in &#8216;Skylarks&#8217; is about, if about anything, the magic of summer and we have attempted to capture something of that in the video which is all shot within walking distance of our house in Brighton. The track is part of an album which is all about friendship &amp; collaboration.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><strong><br><\/strong><br>The Nanocluster project was born out of a Brighton based club night, also called Nanocluster, run by Spigel and Newman alongside writer, broadcaster and DJ Graham Duff, and promoter Andy Rossiter.\u00a0The club features a range of influential and cutting-edge music acts, but the unique aspect of the evenings is that each show climaxes with a one off collaboration between Immersion and the headliners. The songs having been written and recorded in the studio in just three days prior to the performance &#8211; or one day in the case of Schnauss.<br><br><em>\u201cIt could have just been a series of performances.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Newman. \u201c<em>But the fact that we had built the tracks in the studio for the performances means we had these recordings\u201d<\/em>\u00a0adds Spigel. The recordings have since been developed with Immersion heading up pro- duction duties. The result is a beautiful and unique album.\u00a0\u201c<em>I think the really interesting thing is how different everybody is,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Spigel.\u00a0\u201c<em>Both as people and creatively.\u201d<\/em><br><br><strong><u>Immersion + Tarwater<br><\/u><\/strong><br>The German duo of Ronald Lippok and Bernd Jestram have created an impressive body of work. Yet their involvement with Immersion has opened out their sound, creating a more panoramic soundscape.\u00a0<br><br>The opening instrumental <em>Ripples<\/em> is a gentle breathe of optimism, all purring tones and sun dazzled synths. Meanwhile, <em>Mrs. Wood<\/em> is a dubby psychedelic shuffle, Lippok\u2019s vocal cool and assured over a fat bass line and skybound eastern melodics. It feels like a more spacious take on the Tarwater of albums such as\u00a0<em>Suns, Animals and Atoms<\/em>. The four musicians\u2019 third collaboration is Nanocluster\u2019s most pop moment: with a heartfelt yet unsentimental lyric unfurling over feline rhythms, <em>All You Cat Lovers<\/em> is a feel-good anthem for cat lovers everywhere.<br><br><strong><u>Immersion + Laetitia Sadier\u00a0<br><\/u><\/strong><br>An original and distinctive presence in contemporary music, Sadier made her name with the inimitable\u00a0Stereolab, but she\u2019s also created several impressive solo works.\u00a0<br><br>The instrumental <em>Unclustered<\/em> sees Sadier\u2019s spidery guitar weaving through Immersion\u2019s lush web of synths drones. The following <em>Uncensored<\/em> has a subtle melodic tug with a classic Spigel guitar line underpinning Sadier\u2019s sweet yet worldly wise vocal. <em>Riding the Wave<\/em> is another feel good song, swapping between Newman\u2019s plaintive vocal, and Spigel\u2019s vocal and Sadier\u2019s backing vocals. With its uplifting chorus: \u2018Things have a way of working out\u2019 <em>Riding The Wave<\/em> feels like it might be the sound of the summer we\u2019ve all been waiting for.<br><br><strong><u>Immersion + Ulrich Schnauss<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highly respected solo artist, as well as being a member of\u00a0Tangerine Dream, Schnauss\u2019 skill with electronics is legendary.\u00a0<br><br>The opening Remember <em>Those Days On The Road<\/em> skips along on a rimshot rhythm with Spigel\u2019s honeyed vocal telling a tale of life on tour. Yet it is far removed from such usual fare. This feels vulnerable and flecked with melancholy. <em>Skylarks<\/em> opens with a lattice of arpeggios before a gently nagging guitar enters and everything takes a turn for the sublime. <em>So Much Green<\/em> is everything you\u2019d hope a collaboration between Newman, Spigel and Schnauss could be. A constantly spiralling urban-kosmisch, with Spigel\u2019s plangent bass anchoring the celestial sounds. The addition of her wordless backing vocals and recordings of real birdsong only serve to elevate the mood further.<br><br><strong><u>Immersion + Scanner\u00a0<br><\/u><\/strong><br>Scanner &#8211; aka Robin Rimbaud\u00a0&#8211; is one of the most prolific and diverse artists currently working in contemporary music. Spigel and Newman have of course collaborated extensively with Rimbaud before: alongside\u00a0Max Franken<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in the art-pop group\u00a0Githead. But this is something very different.\u00a0<br><br>Their opening piece together: <em>Cataliz<\/em> is the album\u2019s moodiest moment. With its serpentine synth drones it sounds like the soundtrack to a mysterious thriller. The rich pulsing\u00a0<em>Metrosphere<\/em> recalls Immersion\u2019s early work whilst adding another layer of grainy uncertainty. The closing <em>The Mundane and the Profound<\/em> opens with a \u201cRimbaud scanned\u201d recording of an irritated flight attendant but this is eventually subsumed by a simple yet emotive piano figure: a gentle and touching end to a unique collection of songs.<br><br>\u2018Nanocluster Vol.1\u2019 is a testament to a remarkable synergy between a diverse assembly of strongly individual talents.
