The band first sprang to international attention in 2019 when their exhilarating debut album,\u00a0\u2018Dogrel,\u2019 became one of the most highly lauded releases of the year and won them a place on the Mercury Music Prize shortlist. With poetry infusing their music and lyrics, coupled with their joyous, intense live shows, Fontaines D.C. have rightfully earned a reputation as one of the most refreshing and exciting young bands in years; a once-in-a-generation youthquake of literate, rhapsodic brilliance. After picking up nominations at the BRITS (\u201cBest International Group\u201d), GRAMMYs (\u201cBest Rock Album\u201d), and the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards (\u201cBest Album\u201d), the band returned from pandemic lockdown to sell out all 10,000 tickets for their October show at London\u2019s Alexandra Palace before wrapping up work on\u00a0\u2018Skinty Fia\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/i2.cmail20.com\/ei\/j\/44\/E7D\/001\/050301\/csfinal\/AlbumArt-9900000000079e3c.jpg\" alt=\"Fontaines D.C. Skinty Fia cover artwork\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Skinty Fia\u2019\u00a0is an Irish phrase which<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>translates to English as \u201cthe damnation of the deer\u201d and the album\u2019s cover art features a deer, plucked from its natural habitat and deposited in the hallway of a home, illuminated by an artificial red glow. The Irish giant deer is an extinct species and the band\u2019s thoughts on Irish identity are central to\u00a0\u2018Skinty Fia\u2019<em>.<\/em>\u00a0While\u00a0\u2018Dogrel\u2019 was littered with snapshots of the Dublin characters &#8211; like the cabbie in <em>Boys In The Better Land<\/em> &#8211; and\u00a0\u2018A Hero\u2019s Death\u2019 documented the dislocation and disconnection the band felt as they traveled the globe on tour, on\u00a0\u2018Skinty Fia\u2019 Fontaines D.C. are addressing their Irishness from afar as they recreate new lives for themselves elsewhere. For a band whose hometown courses through their veins &#8211; \u201cD.C.\u201d stands for \u201cDublin City\u201d &#8211; the album finds them trying to resolve the need to broaden their horizons with the affection they still feel for the land and people they\u2019ve left behind.<br><br>There are echoes rumbustious rock \u2019n\u2019 roll on \u2018Dogrel,\u2019 and the bleaker atmospheres of\u00a0\u2018A Hero\u2019s Death,\u2019 but<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u2018Skinty<strong> <\/strong>Fia,<strong>\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0the third in the triumvirate, is much more expansive and cinematic.
