’90s shoegaze pioneers Lilys have announced January 2022 West Coast tour dates.\u00a0The band’s West Coast tour will include shows in\u00a0San Francisco, Los Angeles, Pioneertown\u00a0<\/strong>and more. All upcoming shows and ticket links are listed below.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Lilys<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

“There is an energetic shift at play the last 12 months, away from the dominating cultural commodity of outrage,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Kurt Heasley, frontman, founder, and sole constant member of highly influential indie rock band Lilys\u00a0says. Lily\u2019s \u201cCasablanca\u201d tour is here. Acting supervisor\u00a0Don De Vore (Collapsing Scenery), a Lily for twenty years now, remarks that \u201cI have a great respect for these songs, so I\u2019m almost glad they haven\u2019t been overplayed. I\u2019ve gotten together some of the best musicians to pay proper tribute to them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the Lily\u2019s musical style and approach shifted continually in its history, their early recordings, including the stunning debut album\u00a0In the Presence of Nothing,<\/em>\u00a0were strongly influenced by\u00a0My Bloody Valentine.\u00a0The Lilys\u2019 first seven-inch single\u00a0\u2018February Fourteenth,\u2019 released via Slumberland Records in 1991,\u00a0even gives direct tribute to their impact. It\u2019s important to note that\u00a0MBV\u2019s own frontman Kevin Shields is a huge fan of Kurt Heasley\u2019s work,\u00a0and in his book on\u00a0Loveless<\/em>\u00a0for Continuum\u2019s 33 1\/3 series, writer Mike McGonigal called the Lilys \u201cthe only post-MBV \u2018shoegaze\u2019 band that mattered.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1994\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Eccsame the Photon Band,\u2019 described as a \u201challucinatory revelation\u201d<\/em> by Marc Hogan of Pitchfork,\u00a0marks the Lily\u2019s shift to a slower, moodier, and more spaced-out sound. \u201cI went closest to what my 23 year-old brain could stand with\u00a0Eccsame\u2014 to the edge of my own mortality and sanity,\u201d <\/em>Heasley says. \u201cas far as the period, the energy, the zeitgeist of what we were intending, that was the only time we ever did it.\u201d<\/em> An imminent, meticulously remastered vinyl version on a newly revitalized Frontier Records will please fans. \u201cThere\u2019s no reason that should be a $200 record,\u201d<\/em> Kurt says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These shows celebrate the release by the recently-revitalized Frontier Records of an expanded version of their classic collection\u00a0\u2018A Brief History of Amazing Letdowns\u2019\u00a0(originally a 10\u201d on spinART) as a double LP (order<\/a>). These recordings, made in Philadelphia 1993-4, present what Heasley terms \u201cbasically a maximum listen, which properly represents that transitional phase\u201d between the 1992\u00a0Slumberland debut\u00a0\u2018In the Presence of Nothing\u2019\u00a0and their second album\u00a0\u2018Eccsame the Photon Band\u2019\u00a0(originally released by spinART, then reissued by Frontier).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese performances are bringing the personalities –both players and patrons– to the forefront with\u00a0 the largest mythical synthesis,\u201d<\/em> Heasley says. \u201cThe songs largely cover the first epoch \u201890-\u201995, but that\u2019s only most of the set.\u201d<\/em> \u201cI always say that Kurt and I can play guitar for like seven hours straight and not miss a note because we always listen for each other\u2019s mistakes and exploit each other\u2019s mistakes and have that sort of psychic connection,\u201d<\/em> Devore says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Playing these shows we have\u00a0James Richardson of MGMT on guitar,”<\/em> Devore says. “Also playing is\u00a0Evan Weiss of Girls and Sparks on bass;Chris Colley of School of Seven Bells on percussion; Matty McDermott of Nymph on cosmic pedal steel;\u00a0and\u00a0Alex Craig who is a longtime collaborator on guitar.\u00a0Then I will be playing\u00a0synths, samples, and guitars\u00a0and\u00a0Kurt will sing and occasionally play guitar.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expanded format of the \u2018Casablanca\u2019 tour is just another development in the Lilys\u2019 ever-revolving lineup that has included more than seventy-two different musicians since 1991, as well as a myriad of collaborators. Heasley is always pushing the boundaries of his music. This show can be seen as a retrospective performance celebrating the brilliance of his craft and his lasting influence on the current indie scene.
