The new LP is set for release\u00a0on June 24th\u00a0via Stones Throw. The band have also shared its lead single <a href=\"https:\/\/prescriptionpr.cmail20.com\/t\/j-l-zhydhtk-ejlihlkhu-t\/\"><em>New <\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/prescriptionpr.cmail20.com\/t\/j-l-zhydhtk-ejlihlkhu-t\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Beginning<\/em><\/a>. The album rides the imaginary edge where the \u201870s underground met the corporate culture of the \u201880s \u2013 or, as the band puts it,&nbsp;<em>\u201cThat fleeting moment when what was once cool quickly turned and became mainstream, all for the sake of consumerism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using this point in time as a lens through which to view the present moment, \u2018Excess\u2019 takes aim at corporate culture and extravagance via the medium of icy motorik pop songs. The overarching themes of alienation and escapism emerged as Automatic put \u2018Excess\u2019 together, taking writing retreats to flesh out the new songs before decamping to the studio for sprint recording sessions with producer Joo Joo Ashworth (Sasami, FROTH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <em>New Beginning<\/em> \u2013 inspired by the Swedish sci-fi film Aniara \u2013 Automatic reject the false hope of leaving behind a scorched planet and searching for \u201c<em>a better place\u201d<\/em>, at a moment when the ultra-rich are eyeing manned space travel: \u201c<em>In the service of desire \/ We will travel far away\u201d<\/em>. Imagining the \u201c<em>nihilism and loneliness\u201d<\/em> of attempting to escape the planet once unchecked consumerism has reached its logical outcome, the song pictures being \u201c<em>stranded in a space-void with no connection to Earth or humanity.\u201d<\/em> \u200b\u200bIn the video directed by Ambar Navarro, a trip to space starts out fun before taking a dark turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mirrored bodice on the album\u2019s cover \u2013 shot at California\u2019s Salton Sea, a site of environmental decay \u2013 reflects the present day Automatic explores on Excess: distorted and chaotic with a sleek sheen. But the final message on \u2018Excess\u2019 is one of solidarity, rather than despair.
