The full album was mixed and mastered by Grammy nominated engineer \/ producer\u00a0Jack Shirley\u00a0(Deafheaven, Jeff Rosenstock, King Woman), and will be released via\u00a0Kill Rock Stars\u00a0on\u00a0October 21st, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To accompany this\u00a0new single, the band has released a Victorian era themed music video for <em>Endless Heaven<\/em>, complete with powdered wigs and makeup. The video was directed by\u00a0Braith Miller,\u00a0Jeremiah-Durian Williams, and Shutups band member\u00a0Eric Stafford\u00a0(guitars, synth).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Endless Heaven<\/em> is a four and half minute crash course on the songwriting style of\u00a0Shutups, who combine catchy indie punk melodies that share similarities with bands like\u00a0Mannequin Pussy\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>PUP<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>filtered through the go-for-broke ambition of a band like Foxing\u00a0and the experimental genre swirl of\u00a0Spirit of The Beehive.\u00a0\u00a0Describing his intentions behind the single\u00a0<em>Endless Heaven<\/em>, the band\u2019s songwriter and vocalist\u00a0Hadley Davis\u00a0says<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u201cI wanted to write a song that mirrored the feeling of letting out all your air and laying on the bottom of a pool. The crushing comfort of calm water. Every time I worked on this song, I pictured that. It\u2019s a summer song, but for the more mundane moments of summer (sitting in hot cars, power outages, sunburns, days lost to the void). It\u2019s about dissociating and returning mid sentence\u201d<\/em>. The influence of\u00a0Weezer\u00a0on<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Shutups\u00a0is immediately apparent \u2013 something that Mia and Hadley bonded over early on in their friendship. Songs that contrast distorted guitar tones with disarmingly pleasant pop melodies are not exactly a reinvention of the wheel \u2013 in addition to Weezer, they cite bands like\u00a0The\u00a0Pixies\u00a0as inspiration for their own take on the classic quiet-loud-quiet-loud 90s alt rock sound \u2013 but the way they assemble these songs is truly unique.\u00a0<em>\u201cThere\u2019s also a good amount of inspiration pulled from mash-ups, as a compositional tool.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Hadley says.\u00a0\u201c<em>I was and still am obsessed with\u00a0Girl Talk\u2019s Night Ripper. I worshiped that album in high school as it satisfied my need for non-stop hooks and changes. It also taught me the value of juxtaposition in texture. When I write now I\u2019m thinking about cut and paste techniques more so than typical song structure. This album feels like a mashup of our songs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forthcoming new\u00a0Shutups\u00a0album, \u2018I can\u2019t eat nearly as much as I want to vomit,\u2019 is the follow-up to their 2019 debut album\u00a0\u2018Every Day I\u2019m Less Zen,\u2019 where the band honed their signature punk riffs and razor sharp hooks on more streamlined tracks like\u00a0<em>Smile<\/em>, <em>Jaywalk Over Me<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Yellowjacket<\/em>. Later, alongside\u00a0Eric Stafford\u00a0(guitar, secondary vocals, synth) and\u00a0Brandon \u201cBud\u201d Armienti (bass, secondary vocals, synth), they\u2019ve come to release an impressively varied body of work. EPs\u00a0\u20185,\u2019\u00a0\u2018Six,\u2019 and\u00a0\u2018Seven\u2019, as well as LP\u00a0\u2018Every Day I\u2019m Less Zen\u2019 took on styles that varied from the compression of pandemic bedroom production to post isolation expansion and eventual DIY maximalism. Down to their self-produced music videos, their work is textured, layered, and unapologetically provocative.<br><br>The entire band besides drummer\u00a0Mia Wood\u00a0originate from Livermore, CA \u2013 the furthest suburb that can still be technically be counted as part of\u00a0The Bay Area\u00a0\u00a0\u2013 and you can feel the sneering resentment they have for the tech-bro vultures who have slowly taken over the bay in nearly every song the band releases, especially on tracks like\u00a0<em>Shit Opus<\/em>\u00a0from the\u00a0\u2018Seven\u2019\u00a0EP. But the political undertones of their songs are never hamfisted or overly self-serious, always undercutting their most furious and pointed lyrics with an impish smirk and a wry sense of humor.\u00a0<br><br>When asked about the meaning behind the album\u2019s intentionally wordy title, Mia says that\u00a0\u201cI can&#8217;t eat nearly as much as I\u00a0want\u00a0 to vomit\u201d\u00a0refers to the moment,\u00a0<em>\u201cWhen utter revulsion exceeds the basic survival need of sustenance. Go to the furthest limit of disgust and then take one step over the line, and this is what you get.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Having already decided on the album title when they initially began working on it before the pandemic, over the last few incredibly strange years its meaning warped and changed, particularly for Hadley.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt started out in reference to a general disgust in the world, but over time (compounded by the lockdown) the scope of disgust turned inward\u201d\u00a0<\/em>he says,<em>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s largely a collection of songs haunted by self-doubt and insecurities but also growth, fulfillment, and ultimately finding love for yourself. It\u2019s all coated in a thick film of cynicism though, the embarrassment that comes with that personal growth, figuring out what does and doesn&#8217;t work, living with cringe.
