It\u2019s a three-minute, blown out, amped up, Pro-Choice exaltation of acting up and activism featuring Detroit-based rapper IndigoYaj. \u201c<em>Protest songs have always been a balancing act,\u201d<\/em> says The Go! Team\u2019s Ian Parton. \u201c<em>If you&#8217;re too sledgehammer it&#8217;s cringey \u2013\u00a0like the Scorpions&#8217;\u00a0Winds of Change\u00a0or something \u2013\u00a0but at the same time given the stuff they\u2019re trying to pull with abortion rights it feels weird to ignore it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;\u2019<em>Get Up Sequences Part Two<\/em>\u2019\u00a0is an international patchwork.\u00a0A global fruit salad.\u00a0A United Nations of Sound\u201d \u2013\u00a0Ian Parton, The Go! Team<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over their six albums, The Go! Team has\u00a0taken sonic day trips to other lands \u2013\u00a0musically dipping into other cultures. But now on this, their seventh \u2013\u00a0they\u2019ve bought a round-the-world ticket\u2026. \u00a0Benin, Japan, France, India, Texas, and Detroit \u2013\u00a0all stops along the way.\u00a0Wildly different voices from wildly different cultures side by side but all still sounding unmistakably Go! Team staple Ninja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<em>Maybe it&#8217;s an anti-Brexit reflex,<\/em>\u201d says Parton. <em>\u201cA rejection of flag-waving and inward-facing.\u00a0But\u00a0this is no Coke ad, some Valium vision of joining hands on a hillside. The Go! Team has always been about knowing what\u2019s happening but focusing on the good shit.\u00a0It\u2019s about where you let your attention settle.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Latter-day Go! Team records have been on a journey of meaning.\u00a0Often lyrics are heavier than the music suggests.\u00a0\u201c<em>There is definitely a recurring message of action and organising,\u201d<\/em> says Parton, though sometimes the message is more coded. Take the song <em>Getting to Know (All the Ways We\u2019re Wrong For Each Other)<\/em>, rather than the song being about a couple who are wrong for each other, it\u2019s about a girl deciding her country is wrong for her. \u00a0A coded message of anti-patriotism set to sunshine funk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsewhere the track <em>But We Keep on Trying<\/em> is about the unglamorous business of getting back up and going again while\u00a0the Pro-Choice call to arms of the first single <em>Divebomb<\/em> is their most combative yet.\u00a0\u00a0A 3-minute, blown-out, amped-up exaltation of acting up and activism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whammy-O sees The Go! Team collaborate with NYC rapper Nitty Scott who brings an abstract, cut-up approach to the rhymes:\u00a0<em>\u201cwhile you left the water running,\u00a0we were reading poetry to lions and becoming.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>It sounds like The Go! Team but somehow more class of \u201923.\u00a0And on <em>Gemini<\/em>, Ninja takes a celestial viewpoint, the steel drum ricocheting off planets whilst Ninja raps from space \u2013\u00a0taking braggadocios to an intergalactic level:\u00a0<em>\u201cgalaxies got em all aligned, made a universe to my design.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Flute meteor showers, ping pong laser beams, cascading kalimbas.\u00a0\u00a0Its horoscope electro, star-sign synths, astrological acid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Picking up from 2021\u2019s\u00a0\u2018Get Up Sequences Part One,\u2019 Part Two continues the\u00a0feeling of Technicolour overload. \u201c<em>A feeling that there is so much good shit out there that you are grabbing it all at the same time. The record is saying: \u201cLook at this. Look at this\u201d. When you listen to it I just want the saturation of the world to be turned up\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0Simultaneously messy and tight, chaotic and coherent\u00a0both albums have an obsession with the power of a bassline and a backbeat. &#8220;<em>For me each successive Go! Team record just gets fucking groovier and for me grooviness is life,<\/em>\u201d\u00a0Parton says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a journey spanning\u00a0Cyclone Tracey wig-outs, chroma key sitar psychedelia, Casiotone anthems, spoken word melodrama and kalimba callouts.\u00a0Brill building melodies lead into musical handbrake turns, four-track into panoramic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eighteen years after their debut LP, The Go!
