Produced by\u00a0Mario J. McNulty\u00a0(David Bowie, Lou Reed, Nine Inch Nails), mixed by\u00a0Cenzo<strong> <\/strong>Townsend and mastered at\u00a0Abbey Road,\u00a0\u20181 2 3 4\u2019 retains the intrinsic spirit of its early post-punk days, and is also a sterling sonic example of what Modern English have always done best.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album encompasses seething songs with a punk bite (\u201cLong in The Tooth,\u201d \u201cPlastic\u201d), keyboard-forward melodic rockers (&#8220;Not Fake,\u201d &#8220;Crazy Lovers&#8221;) and simmering, darkwave-meets-post-punk gems (\u201cExploding,\u201d \u201cOut to Lunch\u201d).\u00a0With a touch of subtle themes lifted from\u00a0\u2018After the Snow\u2019 (1982) and\u00a0\u2018Ricochet Days\u2019 (1984)<em>\u00a0<\/em>that include the environment, aging, failed relationships, love and more,\u00a0\u20181 2 3 4\u2019 finds the legendary band delving into nostalgia but, as always, exploring new creative territory. With singles <em><a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/rp3r7j\/3m9fkn\/f4i4iq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Long in the Tooth<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/rp3r7j\/3m9fkn\/vwj4iq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><em>Crazy Lovers<\/em><\/a> released in advance of the announcement, now the band offers <em>Not My Leader<\/em>, a scathing observation on politics in both the U.S. and the UK and how they aren\u2019t dissimilar.<em><br><br>\u201cI remember first coming to America in the early-\u201980s,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0frontman\u00a0Robbie Grey\u00a0recalls.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe had Margaret Thatcher and you had Ronald Reagan. And then fast forward to today to Donald Trump and all the politicians and corporate organizations that have followed \u2014 along with their corruption and greed. It\u2019s the same thing 40 years later, really. It\u2019s the same old shit that makes the ordinary person feel sick. Kicking off with a run of support dates with\u00a0The Buzzcocks\u00a0in the U.S., Mexico and Germany in March and April, the band will also be performing as part of the inaugural\u00a0Totally Tubular Festival\u00a0across North America throughout June and July.\u00a0<em>Totally Tubular Festival\u00a0<\/em>will also feature\u00a0Thomas Dolby,\u00a0Thompson Twins\u2019<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Tom Bailey,\u00a0Men Without Hats,\u00a0The Romantics,\u00a0Bow Wow Wow,\u00a0Tommy Tutone\u00a0(in select markets) and\u00a0The Plimsouls<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>across 17 dates, and a portion of proceeds from ticket sales will go towards local food banks in each market. A full listing of Modern English tour dates can be found below, and information on tickets can be found on the band\u2019s website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/rp3r7j\/3m9fkn\/n2m4iq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founding members\u00a0Robbie Grey\u00a0(vocals\/guitar) and\u00a0Mick Conroy\u00a0(bass) started coming up with the music for\u00a0\u20181 2 3 4\u2019\u00a0during the spring 2020 COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, swapping ideas back and forth remotely.\u00a0Conroy set up a temporary home studio in Suffolk, England, with gear arranged in a tiny kitchen area (<em>\u201cOnce I&#8217;d set up, that meant you couldn&#8217;t open the fridge door,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he says) and\u00a0found himself inspired by\u00a0the first Siouxsie and the Banshees album and the David Bowie records featuring Mick Ronson.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After having amassed a batch of fresh songs, restrictions loosened enough so\u00a0Modern English could gather together and go over this new music. The band deliberately went for a<em>\u00a0\u201craw-sounding affair\u201d<\/em>\u00a0that was<em>\u00a0\u201cmore energetic,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Conroy says, and recorded the album in just a few takes with minimal overdubs in a residential studio in upstate New York.\u00a0<em>\u201cWe wanted some edge to it,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Grey says.<em>\u00a0\u201cLive drums and getting the feel of moving from verse to chorus with everyone playing. It sounds like a live album.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grey also says his lyrics on\u00a0\u20181 2 3 4\u2019\u00a0are thematically in line with other Modern English albums.\u00a0<em>\u201cFor me, as a lyricist, it&#8217;s always about personal journeys, or the journey of the band, or just getting pissed off with governments and politicians,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>he says. As an example, he cites the pointed <em>Not My Leader<\/em>, inspired by the fact that \u201c<em>it seemed that everybody in charge of the world was completely incompetent,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>as he puts it. Other favorites include \u201cNot Fake\u201d (<em>\u201cI like quoting all the things I don&#8217;t like,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he says with a laugh) and \u201cLong In the Tooth,\u201d a song about getting older.\u00a0<em>\u201cIt says what it needs to and it gets its message across. For a lyricist, that&#8217;s a very important thing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band\u2019s keen sense of dynamics is also evident throughout\u00a0\u20181 2 3 4\u2019. The album-closing \u201cVoices\u201d is particularly subdued, bolstered by echoing, Doppler-like sound effects and Grey\u2019s somber vocals; the effect falls somewhere between spacey psychedelic rock and tranquil shoegaze.\u00a0<em>\u201cWith Modern English, we start off with an idea and then we go off on slight tangents,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>says Conroy.\u00a0<em>\u201cBut there&#8217;s always one or two songs that don&#8217;t sound anything like punk rock. They sound like Modern English.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern English co-produced their sophomore effort, 1982\u2019s\u00a0\u2018After the Snow,\u2019 with Hugh Jones (The Sound, Echo &amp; The Bunnymen), pairing trademark moodiness with spiky guitars and shimmering keyboards. In addition to the UK top 40 hit <em>Life in the Gladhouse<\/em>, the LP became known for <em>I Melt With You<\/em>, which became a top 10 hit at U.S. rock radio and crossed over to the\u00a0<em>Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 pop chart.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A paragon of consistency, Modern English have become widely respected over the years as innovators, thanks to younger generations discovering their catalog and new artists citing the band as an influence. This increased popularity has translated to sold-out tours performing their early albums and a main stage appearance at the 2023\u00a0<em>Cruel World Festival<\/em>\u00a0in front of more than 25,000 people.\u00a0<em><br><br>It\u2019s been a big journey for everybody, and our early days are really important to us,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Grey summarizes<em>. \u201cWe haven&#8217;t changed that much. We&#8217;re still the same people inside. And the original members are the sound of the band \u2014 Stephen [Walker] on the keyboards, making lots of noises with all his analog synths, and then the sounds made by guitarist Gary [McDowell] or bassist Mick [Conroy].
