{"id":40319,"date":"2024-04-29T12:15:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-29T16:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=40319"},"modified":"2024-04-14T20:27:08","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T00:27:08","slug":"mike-lindsay-collaborates-with-anna-b-savage-on-the-subtly-danceable-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/?p=40319","title":{"rendered":"Mike Lindsay collaborates with Anna B Savage on the subtly danceable \u2018table\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mike Lindsay\u00a0and\u00a0Anna B Savage\u00a0collaborate on new single\u00a0<em>table<\/em> &#8211; the latest track to be shared from\u00a0Mike Lindsay&#8217;s debut solo album &#8216;supershapes volume\u00a01&#8217; &#8211; out\u00a0June\u00a014th via\u00a0Moshi Moshi Records.<br><br>One half of\u00a0LUMP\u00a0with\u00a0Laura Marling\u00a0and co-founder of pioneering UK acid folktronica band\u00a0Tunng, elsewhere\u00a0Mike Lindsay\u00a0is\u00a0known for producing\u00a0Speech Debelle&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Mercury Music<\/em>\u00a0prize winning album &#8216;Speech Therapy&#8217;, along with his work with\u00a0Jon Hopkins, DuBlonde,\u00a0Songhoy Blues\u00a0and more recent production<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>for\u00a0Dana Gavanski,\u00a0Meadow Meadow\u00a0and\u00a0William Doyle.<br><br>Lindsay&#8217;s newly announced debut\u00a0album is the\u00a0first instalment in a series of solo records that will explore\u00a0<em>\u201cthe miraculous in the mundane\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>with &#8216;supershapes\u00a0volume 1&#8217; looking\u00a0widely at\u00a0<em>\u201ceveryday domestic objects, the daily rituals that shape us, heavily focusing on the majestic in the domestic\u201d<\/em>.<br><br>On new single\u00a0<em>table<\/em>, Lindsay&#8217;s\u00a0120-year-old dining room table \u2013\u00a0at which\u00a0he\u00a0built the\u00a0foundations\u00a0of the new album \u2013\u00a0is pulled\u00a0into focus. Watch the video clip for <em>table<\/em> via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Kh3X6snHrKc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>\u201cWho else sat round this perfect rectangle, with kids and hopes and friendship? \/ And who else smeared errant gravy off it with their fingertips?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0sings\u00a0Anna B Savage, amidst floating synth arrangements and\u00a0subtly danceable percussion.\u00a0From an ordinary household object appears a rich seam of history and emotion, the table given its own agency, and a century\u2019s worth of secrets\u2026\u00a0<br><br>On collaborating with Mike Lindsay on <em>table<\/em> and the new album,\u00a0Anna B Savage\u00a0said: <em>&#8220;I asked Mike to send me a big email with his current preoccupations and niggling thoughts. He sent back a tome, with a section about panpsychism. Panpsychism is (to put it horribly simply, forgive me) the idea that every object in the world has a consciousness of some sort, no matter how \u2018unimaginably simple\u2019 that consciousness might be. Mike had been thinking about this phenomenon particularly in relation to a dining table he bought second hand. He said it was one hundred and twenty two years old, \u201cso for 122 years people have sat around\u2026 and shared stories, or experiences with each other\u201d. Obviously this is a fantastically evocative thought, so when I came in to record I ran with that, imagining a series of vignettes around the table. Hopefully evoking the real beauty in the mundanity of a life around an object. And then at the end, the table is afforded a more specific consciousness: \u201cwhat does the table think of you?\u201d<br><br>Working with Mike on his supershapes project will forever be one of my favourite endeavours. Any excuse to work with him more was gonna be leapt on by me, and in particular to think he wanted me to work on something is just too much for my little heart to handle. We had (and have) so much fun. What more could you want.&#8221;<\/em><br><br>New single <em>table<\/em> is accompanied by a suitably mind-expanding, homeware-themed video created by Lindsay&#8217;s close collaborator\u00a0Ben Edwards\u00a0(aka\u00a0Benge), using a combination of modern computer software, vintage analogue and early digital video hardware.<br><br>On the video, Mike Lindsay added:\u00a0<em>&#8220;There&#8217;s something brilliantly bizarre about Benge&#8217;s video for table. It first captures the nostalgia of all the table scenarios that Anna is singing about with wonderful found footage, but then suddenly, alongside the cacophony of Robert&#8217;s sax clusters, we are smashed with the pure joy of VHS digi colour tables flying at us from every angle.. sizzling with potent sorcery !! Totally tabletastic!&#8221;<\/em><br> <br>At first,\u00a0Mike Lindsay\u00a0had thought &#8216;supershapes volume 1&#8217; would be purely instrumental album. As time went on though, Lindsay felt the songs were still missing a voice, as he explained:\u00a0<em>&#8220;The more the songs developed as instrumentals, the more I could imagine the tones of Anna B Savage. I had already worked with Anna on her album in|FLUX which was a wonderful experience. She is a true poet of the everyday emotions. Over four or five days together in my new studio in Margate, the supershapes started to come alive!\u201d\u00a0<\/em><br><br>Then Lindsay would bring in multi-instrumentalist\u00a0Ross Blake, adding breathy woodwind and soft saxophones which weaved through the analogue polyrhythmic shapes.\u00a0<em>\u201cI had also just worked with Robert Stillman on the Nick Drake cover of &#8216;Saturday Sun&#8217; I did with Guy Garvey,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Lindsay recalls.\u00a0<em>\u201cRobert is an incredible saxophone player and musician. He has this beautiful thick and warm wild tone. I asked him to come in for a couple of days to bring his magic to the shapes.\u201d<\/em><br><br>Others came on board too, including drummer\u00a0Adam Betts, who Lindsay had seen play as part of\u00a0Three Trapped Tigers,\u00a0Squarepusher\u2019s\u00a0Shobaleader One,\u00a0and his own\u00a0Colossal Squid\u00a0solo drum show in Margate.\u00a0<em>\u201cI thought perhaps he could bring something to the shapes, which of course he did, weaving in and out of the sampled objects.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><br><br>Lindsay built the foundation of &#8216;supershapes volume 1&#8217; at his 120-year-old dining table. Inspired by his wife Lily\u2019s MA studies in fine art, Lindsay mulled over the idea that objects have memories and their own consciousness.<br><br>Other influences included:\u00a0<em>\u201ccontemporary productions like Foodman\u2019s \u2018Yasuragi Land\u2019, a Japanese experimental manic scatter sample electronica artist who blows my mind. Kate NV: I love her bass sounds and twisted melodic rhythms. Also, I was listening to Beverly Glenn-Copeland\u2019s \u2018Keyboard Fantasies\u2019\u201d<\/em> Lindsay continues.<br><br><em>\u201cThis record is one that I\u2019m very proud of,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he concludes.<em>\u00a0\u201cI hope that people are immersed by the record and feel the journey.
