Evan Cartwright, an in-demand session musician and collaborator in Toronto\u2019s vibrant jazz\/experimental scene with acts such as U.S. Girls and The Weather Station, joined after their first practice in 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, Cola released their debut LP\u00a0\u2018Deep In View\u2019\u00a0on\u00a0Fire Talk Records. Earning praise from outlets like\u00a0Pitchfork, NPR, FADER, Stereogum, Uproxx, Paste, BrooklynVegan, Consequence, Clash, NME\u00a0and\u00a0Rolling Stone\u00a0who named the band an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firetalkrecs.us11.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=5694861394877ae40d1c9a32c&amp;id=408ea8c2b6&amp;e=ebf8659a9b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artist You Need To Know<\/a>\u00a0and called their debut &#8220;one of the year\u2019s most thrilling rock statements,&#8221; the album was one of the year&#8217;s most acclaimed debuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band have returned to announce their sophomore LP, an album called\u00a0\u2018The Gloss,\u2019 that will be out via\u00a0Fire Talk\u00a0on\u00a0June 14th.\u00a0Along with the announcement, they are sharing a new single titled\u00a0<em>Pallor Tricks<\/em><strong>.<\/strong> Watch the official video for <em>Pallor Tricks<\/em> via YouTube below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sOYGiluzaUQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>From their inception Cola have expanded on the d.i.y. ethic of the Dischord and SST eras, creating potent sounds from a minimal palette of drums\/bass\/guitar and lacing their songs with winsome one-liners and societal commentary. What\u2019s another word for commentary? Gloss, apparently. Never basic, the lyrics reward repeated listening for deeper meanings. David Berman\u2019s poetry-via-garage light pennings are an inspiration, as equally so are the lighter side of UK first-wave New Wave and the Dunedin sound. The results are in the pudding: at times sparse and poetic, at others a thrilling, hook-laden good time, as with the cheeky romantic sketch of a\u00a0one-night\u00a0stand that is so overflowing with innuendo-cum-journalism talk that it almost teeters over into self-parody. It&#8217;s an album bursting with energy and wit and ideas\u2013filled to the margins.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the band&#8217;s singles since their last LP, \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/cola-share-new-track-keys-down-if-you-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Cola share new track \u2018Keys Down If You Stay\u2019\">Keys Down If You Stay<\/a>\u2019 and last month&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/cultureaddicts.com\/cola-return-with-new-single-bitter-melon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Cola return with new single \u2018Bitter Melon\u2019\">Bitter Melon<\/a><\/em> (both of which appear on their new LP) saw the band in a looser and more exploratory mode than their debut, <em>Pallor Tricks<\/em> ups the tempo, seeing the band at perhaps the most volatile point in their catalog to date, with nervous rhythms desperately chasing different shades of distortion in search of equilibrium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darcy says of the track: \u201c<em>The title Pallor Tricks is obviously a play on \u2018parlor tricks.\u2019 The lyrics feature imagery from film sets and such. I suppose I was thinking of the kind of self-consciousness that can arise when a camera is rolling. I\u2019ve always been particularly affected by the performances I (rarely) see on so-called \u2018reality tv.\u2019 The type of performance where a person is compelled into a kind of \u2018hyper-real\u2019 state where they summon grotesque approximations of emotion that are exaggerated but not elevated, as they are in art. I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s lots of compelling stuff that goes on in those programs and I don&#8217;t mean to cast aspersions, this idea of performance simply became a jumping off point when we were writing this one. The song also cycles to a more sincere open chorus, a kind of musical juxtaposition.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The video by Craig Scheihing is not only a brilliant piece of film, it also mirrors some of these themes by presenting an array of screens and refracted 16 MM dreamscapes alongside this kind of direct connection of Evan and his girlfriend.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the band&#8217;s previously announced European tour dates that will take place in the spring.
