Just in time to shake the darling buds of May, Japanese avant pop maestro Cornelius celebrates 30 years as one of music\u2019s most compelling songwriters, producers, and performers with Sketch for Spring<\/em>. The track is the lead single from his magical new LP,\u00a0\u2018Ethereal Essence,\u2019 the latest turning point in an already celebrated and iconoclastic career. Of the single, Cornelius says,\u00a0\u201cThis song was written for the background music in the tube of PARCO, a culturalb complex in Shibuya. The title is a tribute to my favorite guitarist Vini Reilly [of British post-punk band Durutti Column].\u201d\u00a0<\/em>You can listen to the single here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shift in direction from his famed alternative pop style to a more ambient and abstract approach,\u00a0\u2018Ethereal Essence\u2019\u00a0marks Cornelius\u2019 first full-length album since the critically acclaimed\u00a0\u2018Dream in Dream\u2019\u00a0(2023), and\u00a0\u2018Mellow Waves\u2019\u00a0(2017).\u00a0Dream in Dream<\/a>\u2019s singles and videos \u2013\u00a0 Change and Vanish<\/em>, Sparks<\/em> and All Things Must Pass<\/em> \u2013 were received adoringly throughout 2023. Reflecting on the evolution of his sound, Cornelius explains, \u201cI gathered songs that have an ethereal feel from the various purposes for which they have been produced over the past few years and I decided to make one album. With the current strange situation in the world and the stressful social life, I feel comfortable with something that fits into the introspection and spiritual world. Last year, I exhibited my work at\u00a0Ambient Kyoto<\/a>\u00a0in Kyoto with\u00a0Ryuichi Sakamoto\u00a0and others.\u201d<\/em> In addition to Sakamoto and Cornelius (whose collaboration was enthusiastically received), the prestigious festival also included Shiro Takatani, Buffalo Daughter, and Seiichi Yamamoto, a noteworthy lineup overflowing with genius highlighting Kyoto\u2019s significance in the world of music and art.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His current focus is nothing new. Cornelius has been a fan of ambient music his whole life and includes Raymond Scott\u2019s\u00a0Soothing Sounds for Baby,<\/em>\u00a0Hiroshi Yoshimura\u2019s\u00a0Music for Nine Postcards<\/em>, Jonny Nash\u2019s\u00a0Exit Strategies<\/em>,\u00a0The Sweet Enough\u2019s\u00a0Marshmallow<\/em>, and Steve Hiett\u2019s\u00a0Down on the Road\u00a0by the Beach<\/em>\u00a0among his favourite ambient albums of all time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming tour in support of\u00a0\u2018Dream in Dream in Dream\u2019\u00a0features Cornelius 20-year compatriots\u00a0Hirohisa Horie\u00a0on keyboards (also a support member for Yukihiro Takahashi\u2019s Yellow Magic Orchestra) and\u00a0Yuko Araki\u00a0on drums (also a member of Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band along with Cornelius); and Buffalo Daughter\u2019s\u00a0Yumiko Ohno\u00a0on Moog and bass, who joined Cornelius in 2016 on his indelible Fantasma World Tour. Cornelius and his band will be playing songs from his five previous albums since 1992, beginning with the landmark LP\u00a0\u2018Fantasma\u2019.
