Chad Peck? He\u2019s a high school English teacher from Canada who\u2019s just as likely to reference Stephen Dedalus as he is to gush over the Beach Boys or a killer fuzz pedal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peck\u2019s band, Kestrels, is set to drop their most ambitious record yet,\u00a0\u2018Better Wonder,\u2019 on February 14, 2025, via Darla Records. The album dives into love, loss, and a life spent chasing meaning. \u201c\u2018<em>History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake,\u2019<\/em>\u201d Peck says, quoting\u00a0<em>Ulysses<\/em>. \u201c<em>That line fits perfectly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Love Letter to Music<\/strong><br>Kestrels started in 2008, but Peck\u2019s musical journey began in his teens, devouring punk cassettes and teaching himself guitar at the kitchen table. Inspired by the Beach Boys, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins, he later launched his label, Noyes Records, to release his music and support local bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band\u2019s 2012 release,\u00a0\u2018A Ghost History,\u2019 opened doors, leading to U.K. and U.S. tours. In 2016, their self-titled record earned spots opening for Dinosaur Jr. and Ash. Peck forged a friendship with J Mascis during those tours, which eventually led to collaborations on 2020\u2019s\u00a0<em>Dream or Don\u2019t Dream<\/em>. That record, a mostly solo effort, was helmed by renowned producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) and mastered by Greg Calbi (David Bowie, Blondie).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, with\u00a0\u2018Better Wonder,\u2019 Peck\u2019s pushing further, working again with Agnello and a revamped lineup that includes bassist Jim MacAlpine (Weird Nightmare) and drummer Michael Catano (North of America).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Deep Dive Into\u00a0\u2018Better Wonder<\/strong>\u2019<br>Peck describes\u00a0\u2018Better Wonder\u2019 as \u201c<em>a nighttime record riddled with anxiety.\u201d<\/em> Writing began in 2021 during a turbulent period in his rural Canadian home. \u201c<em>I lived alone in the woods for most of my adult life. I loved it, but during that time, everything felt unsettled \u2014 like three a.m. insomnia turned into sound.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album reflects that disquiet, mixing analog production with murky, atmospheric textures. <em>\u201cI wanted to make something familiar but still surprising and new,\u201d<\/em> he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Highlights include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cLilys\u201d<\/em>: A storm of guitars and percussion about holding on too tightly. \u201cIt\u2019s about incompatible ideas somehow making a relationship work.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cDream of You in Black\u201d<\/em>: A synthy love song with Robert Smith vibes. \u201cIt\u2019s about overthinking and how your mind creates fictions when you\u2019re waiting for someone.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cFloat Alone\u201d<\/em>: A fuzzy homage to Dinosaur Jr. that Peck calls \u201ca self-fulfilling prophecy of a song.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cSleepless\u201d<\/em>: A lush blend of My Bloody Valentine and Brian Wilson. \u201cIt\u2019s straightforward: I was quietly losing it.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cNightlife\u201d<\/em>: The hardest-edged track, written after the 2020 Canadian mass shooting that hit close to home. \u201cThis is my \u2018fuck you\u2019 to our need to make sense of horror.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cNausicaa\u201d<\/em>: A twilight meditation on loneliness, love, and identity featuring Alex Gehring of Ringo Deathstarr.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cultureaddicts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_3333.jpeg\"><img
