The track\u2019s out now and it\u2019s everything you\u2019d expect from a project that\u2019s been quietly cutting through the noise with a scalpel \u2014 sharp, dry-witted, and unflinchingly observant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built from the ruins of late-stage capitalism and flickering bus stop daydreams,&nbsp;<strong>poor effort<\/strong>&nbsp;exists somewhere in the sweet spot between post-punk frustration and alternative hip-hop clarity. It\u2019s like if John Cooper Clarke wandered into a Burial set and decided to stick around. Over a backdrop of warped synths, shaky drum loops and grayscale guitar stabs, Dagger delivers his tales \u2014 deadpan, defiant, and totally unbothered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<em>Where if you have a high rise you\u2019ll be set in life \/ Living life up above the slums \u2018n\u2019 dives\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This line from&nbsp;<em>City Of Hope<\/em>&nbsp;cuts to the core of what the track is getting at: the tug-of-war between hope and disillusionment in modern city life. Dagger doesn\u2019t preach \u2014 he observes, he reflects, he raises an eyebrow. It\u2019s a commentary, sure, but also a confession. Cities are where people chase dreams, but they\u2019re also where those dreams get squeezed through gentrification, burnout, and inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2I4Wv2WGzqY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-CA&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt<em> might sound like I despise the place, I don&#8217;t,\u201d<\/em> says Dagger. \u201c<em>It\u2019s an observation of the type of city which has been pretty good to me&#8230; maybe that\u2019s the greate<\/em>st irony of all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming off the back of a buzzy run of 2024 singles (<em>You\u2019re Wrong, I\u2019m Right (Symphony)<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>HMRC<\/em>),&nbsp;<strong>poor effort<\/strong>&nbsp;has already found fans at&nbsp;<strong>BBC 6 Music<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>DIY Magazine<\/strong>, and anyone looking for something a little more real in a world that often feels like a flat pack version of itself. The EP was finished with producer&nbsp;<strong>Dean Glover<\/strong>&nbsp;(Rootz Manuva, Anthony Szmierek) in Cheetham Hill \u2014 an area that bleeds creativity and contradiction in equal measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a reason people are drawing comparisons to\u00a0<strong>Sleaford Mods<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Benefits<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Kae Tempest<\/strong>. But Dagger\u2019s voice is very much his own: slow-burning, conversational, and deeply rooted in the post-industrial sprawl of the North. He\u2019s been putting in the live reps too \u2014 playing\u00a0<strong>Colours Hoxton<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Thump!<\/strong>, and hosting his own shandy-fuelled showcase at b<strong>The Eagle Inn<\/strong>\u00a0in Salford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re into dusty drum machines, back-alley philosophies, or the art of poetic discontent,&nbsp;<strong>poor effort<\/strong>&nbsp;has something brewing that\u2019s worth your time.&nbsp;<em>City Of Hope<\/em>&nbsp;is the opening chapter \u2014 grimy, grounded, and weirdly uplifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The debut EP is due October 2025.
