Salford\u2019s resident urban poet and lo-fi punk provocateur poor effort<\/strong> returns with a brand new single, talking mouth (on & on)<\/em>,<\/strong> a slow-burning, synth-drenched meditation on the madness of modern communication. It\u2019s the latest offering from his upcoming debut EP, set to drop October 3, 2025 on Hope Taping<\/strong>, in partnership with EMI North<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known for turning minimal fuss into maximum punch, poor effort (aka Matty Dagger<\/strong>) rides a tightrope between post-punk poetry, DIY electronica, and alt-hip-hop grit. If you\u2019ve ever wondered what it might sound like if The Streets<\/strong>, Sleaford Mods<\/strong>, and early Gorillaz<\/strong> sat in a crumbling Manchester flat trying to explain the internet to each other, you\u2019re in the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

talking mouth (on & on)<\/em> is a hazy, low-frequency swirl of barbed one-liners, lo-fi basslines, and anxiety-stained insight. Lyrically, Dagger is locked into the chaos of information overload and the strange ego trip of digital life, skewering it with a smirk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first \u2018talking mouth\u2019 was a lot faster and more of a thrashy garage punk song,\u201d<\/em> Dagger explains. \u201cBut I struggled to get the chorus to feel right at that pace. I slowed the tempo down and found that this let it breathe a lot more while still maintaining its distinct drive. The synth melody and sequencers then transformed the nature of the song completely.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The result is classic poor effort: sharp, moody, and tongue firmly in cheek. It follows the June release of\u00a0City of Hope,<\/em><\/a><\/strong> a frenetic and politically-charged anthem that sparked airplay on\u00a0BBC 6 Music<\/strong>,\u00a0Radio X<\/strong>, and\u00a0BBC Introducing Manchester<\/strong>, with shoutouts from Deb Grant and Chris Hawkins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new single continues that momentum and builds toward what\u2019s shaping up to be a killer debut EP. Written mostly in isolation and shaped with producer Dean Glover<\/strong> (Roots Manuva, Anthony Szmierek) in Cheetham Hill, the EP is a patchwork of synth textures, punchy drum loops, and observational grit. It\u2019s music made from overstimulation and crafted with care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

poor effort made early noise with raw and ready singles like\u00a0You\u2019re Wrong, I\u2019m Right (Symphony)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0HMRC<\/em><\/strong> in 2024, grabbing the attention of\u00a0DIY Magazine<\/strong>,\u00a0Louder Than War<\/strong>, and the BBC. Live shows followed, including gigs at\u00a0Colours Hoxton<\/strong>,\u00a0The Eagle Inn<\/strong>, and underground nights like\u00a0Thump!<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Akoustik Anarkhy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now with a live band in tow and a growing catalogue of sad bangers, poor effort is taking his distinctive sound into bigger rooms while still keeping that back-room energy alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
