Mark Mothersbaugh is ready to blow your mind once again as MutMuz Gallery unveils his debut solo exhibition, ‘Why Are We Here No. 01.’ Set against the vibrant backdrop of Chinatown, Los Angeles, the show kicks off on April 11 from 7–11pm.

Critics have been raving:

  • “Mothersbaugh is an artistic powerhouse.” – Artforumb
  • “In a career spanning four decades, his work touches on every art form imaginable – you might not even realize you’ve experienced it.” – Entertainment Weekly
  • “More than just pop hits, he’s a collaborator, a jingle wizard, a quirky TV character, and the creative force behind the unforgettable soundtrack of ‘The Lego Movie.’ And throughout it all, he’s been making art.” – WIRED
  • “There is no one who channels the free-wheeling spirit of the Beat Generation and the raw energy of graffiti quite like Mark Mothersbaugh.” – FLOOD Magazine
  • “A creative boundary-breaker since the 1970s.” – It’s Nice That
  • “A grand master of juxtaposition, weaving together contrasting ideas with effortless flair.” – Ink19

This exhibition marks the first chapter of a series exploring life’s biggest questions. Mothersbaugh, who calls himself a “contemporary social scientist,” blends the familiar with the surreal to craft dreamlike scenes that invite us to ponder the mysteries of existence. Each piece is a window into his unique perspective on life’s beautiful chaos.

Reflecting on his journey, Mothersbaugh shares, “I’ve been collecting art since I was a kid. Over the years, my work grew from a personal archive to a vast warehouse of creative experiments. It felt like time to share these treasures directly with those who appreciate them, outside the confines of traditional galleries.”

MutMuz Gallery is not just an art space; it’s a milestone that bridges Mothersbaugh’s worlds of music and visual art. Named after his production studio, Mutato Muzika—a playful nod to “Mutant” and “Potato”—the gallery embodies the spirit of experimentation and reinvention that has defined his career. From co-founding DEVO to composing for over 150 films, TV shows, video games, and commercials, his journey is a testament to creativity without limits.

Join us on this immersive adventure into the mind of one of today’s most innovative artists. ‘Why Are We Here No. 01’ promises to be an evening of art, music, and thought-provoking inspiration.
