Vancouver’s Mode Moderne have announced the North American release of the latest EP, ‘Strange Bruises’ available on May 15 via Light Organ Records. Mode Moderne’s sound can best be described as gloom-pop which is equal parts dreary darkness and beautifully melodic. Watch the video for the EP’s first single Nightly Youths below.
“You have these bands like The Fresh and Onlys or The Go Betweens that were never part of the Lo-fi scene or the Flying Nun scene” Mode Moderne’s singer Phillip Intilé explains, “they weren’t associating themselves with any sound or any genre. When you call your debut album Ghosts Emerging as we did and you have a song that mentions suicide people go a certain direction, but it’s really not that simple.” Mode Moderne has a depth that defies the obvious categorizations, although there are some identifiers that member’s of the band find too appealing to totally write off.
“Not that I want to align myself with a genre,” Intilé laughs, “but if I did it would be mope pop. We’re the sad book club.”
