patten share new video for ‘Epsilon’

patten Epsilon

Watch Epsilon, the latest video lifted from patten’s ‘Ψ’ album, via YouTube below. FADER said the following about the video, “if the surreal quality of the animation set to patten’s electronic grunge-pop soundtrack wasn’t enough of an out-of-body experience, things only get a lot more hellish as the video drives on.

The heavily emotive track features patten member A serenely singing while riding a doomed, dystopian train in a not-so-distant future. Directed by London-based video team Werkflow, this completely CG piece sees patten continue their onward drive at the forefront of technological creativity and a further step into the post-apocalyptic, industrial landscape of the band’s new album. Epsilon was entirely shot, edited and rendered within a games engine cut-scene editor, the preferred method for Werkflow. This video’s hyperreal figure visualisation was realised through collaboration with Sheffield’s Ten24 who produced the photogrammetry, and Cubic Motion who captured the facial performance.

A statement from directors Werkflow: “In creating the Epsilon video, we wanted A’s vocal performance to drive the main narrative. The lyrics are delicate and full of longing which particulate under the hard futurism of the track. The idea was to represent granular and glassy sounds with light playing upon something ominous and mechanical. We wanted to create a setting that was disquieting – something clunky and transient that would feel hostile with little human presence. A sleeper train felt like the right environment in which to frame this narrative of introspection.

patten EpsilonWe wanted the scene to allow space for the audience to create their own narrative. To this effect the source of the destruction that plays out over the course of the video, remains ambiguous.”

‘Ψ,’ patten’s second album on Warp is a singular amalgamation of deconstructed club music with multiple strains of Pop, Post Punk Industrial and hi-tech electronics.
