Penelope Stevens, best known for holding down the bass, keys, and occasional vocals in Canadian avant-rock trio Motherhood, is stepping into the spotlight with a brand new project: Penny & The Pits. Their debut album, ‘Liquid Compactor,’ is out June 27, and they’re giving us an early taste with the release of the new single Pool Party and its brand new video, made entirely by an all-femme team.

Pool Party is a surf-punk anthem about solidarity and rebellion, painting a vivid scene of femmes crewing up in the deep end and shaving their heads like Sinead. It’s gritty, raw, and hits with the kind of energy that demands you move.

If you have a thing for Motherhood, Amyl & The Sniffers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or guitar-driven chaos with a smart edge, Penny & The Pits is about to become your new obsession.

About ‘Liquid Compactor

The pits can mean bad luck, ugly sweat stains, or sweet cherries. It is all part of the energy that fuels Penny & The Pits. This new project sees Penelope Stevens channeling the rawness of lived experience into a set of songs that tear through personal and collective histories with humor, grit, and a whole lot of heart.

On ‘Liquid Compactor,’ Stevens puts their voice front and centre for the first time. The record taps into the power of feminist rage and joy, carving a space where catharsis and celebration live side-by-side. Water and liquid imagery flow throughout — from the Bay of Fundy to hotel pools — turning the tides of pain into unstoppable waves of power.

This is not a record about staying still. It is about feeling it all, sweating it out, and coming out the other side stronger.

When I was writing these songs, I imagined my closest femme and queer friends in the front row, singing along,” Stevens says. “If I could not see them there, I set the idea aside. This album is about holding that heaviness, that intensity, and that joy together.”
