Get ready for heavy guitars, raw lyrics, and an emotional rush. Los Angeles–based rock project Shunkan (the creative force of Marina Sakimoto) has just released Prettier, the third preview from ‘Kamikaze Girl,’ her first studio album in over five years. Now streaming everywhere via Rite Field Records.

Why Prettier hits different

  • Emotion Rollercoaster: From simmering melancholy to full-on fury, Marina’s haunting vocals ride slow-burning beats into gritty guitar blasts.
  • Honest Lyrics: Tackling self-worth and identity, Prettier feels like a raw nerve you’ll wear on your sleeve.
  • Producer Impact: Grammy-nominated Alex Newport (Death Cab for Cutie, Melvins) crafted a chorus that balances Sakimoto’s knack for catchy hooks with fearless exploration.

“Originally, Prettier didn’t have a chorus like it does now… Prettier feels like an exposed nerve, but I hope it resonates with anyone else who feels like they don’t fit into conventions.” — Marina Sakimoto

More about Shunkan

Born on the Gemini–Taurus cusp and raised between two cultures, Marina Sakimoto has always navigated dual worlds—tension that fuels every Shunkan track. Since debuting the EP ‘Honey, Milk and Blood’ in 2014, she’s built anthemic, fuzz-soaked soundscapes that merge emo intensity with indie-rock hooks.

Her 2014 LP ‘The Pink Noise’ not only earned critical acclaim but also secured a spot in New Zealand’s National Library for its cultural impact. After signing to Rite Field Records in 2024, Marina returns with her most personal, electrifying record yet: ‘Kamikaze Girl’.
