New EP ‘Modern Roses’ arrives April 25 via [PIAS] Recordings

Soft Loft are back with a shimmering new single, Paper Plane, and it’s the perfect teaser for their upcoming EP, ‘Modern Roses,’ landing April 25 via [PIAS] Recordings. If dreamy indie pop and arty indie rock had a lovechild, this track would be it—think slinky, psychedelic grooves meeting vulnerable storytelling.

The Story Behind Paper Plane

Vocalist Jorina Stamm found inspiration in a real-life moment of sweet awkwardness. At a Supersonic show in Paris, flu symptoms crept in, so she slipped away to the bar, popped a nausea pill… and started folding a paper plane using instructions on a flyer. Completely absorbed in her origami mission, she missed a flirtatious approach—until the guy asked what she was doing. Jorina recalls, “I was so focused on that plane I didn’t even realize he was trying to chat me up. I told him the honest truth, and he probably thought I was brushing him off. Looking back, it feels like a scene from a DIY rom‑com or a Wes Anderson film: human awkwardness finding its own quirky romance.”

What It Sounds Like

Imagine a vintage drum machine backbeat driving you forward, a bass line roaring like a classic muscle car, and swirling guitars and synths bathed in warm spring reverb. Jorina’s voice quivers over it all, carrying you higher—like you’re actually flying on a folded sheet of paper. If roses are cliché, Soft Loft propose a new ritual: fold someone a paper plane, launch it their way, and let it say “I like you.”

Why You’ll Love ‘Modern Roses’

Last year, Soft Loft self-released ‘In Case You Get Lonely’ and their full‑length debut ‘The Party and the Mess,’ both produced by Grammy‑nominated Gianluca Buccellati (Lana Del Rey, Arlo Parks). Without a single promo push, tracks found their way onto Seattle’s KEXP and the North American College Radio Charts, keeping the album spinning for six weeks straight. They’ve since toured London, Paris, Berlin, and rocked festivals like The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, MS Dockville, Maifeld Derby, and Montreux Jazz Festival.

On ‘Modern Roses,’ the Swiss collective dives into the little gestures that bridge the gap between us: folding paper, whispered confessions, and those imperfect moments that feel impossibly beautiful. They also explore the other side—loneliness, miscommunication, and the ache of being left behind—wrapped in lush, psychedelic textures that swing from melancholy to ecstatic in a heartbeat.

Inside the Making

The songs were born in a secret hideaway in Barico, Ticino—a cozy house with a “magical” garden, as Jorina puts it. Then the band decamped to a defunct hotel on the edge of Dresden, armed with nothing but each other and their trusted engineer. For days, they tinkered with arrangements and sound design, forging a deeper connection that shines through every note. ‘Modern Roses’ feels like a late‑night chat among close friends, honest and unfiltered.

When asked about the EP’s title, Jorina explains, “It comes from our lyric, ‘modern roses are paper planes.’ In 2024, why not get creative? Folding someone a paper plane might just be the sweetest way to say you care.”
